Special Issue CFP: Communities, ICTs, and the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina
Dear AoiR scholars, As we approach the 20th anniversary of when Hurricane Katrina made landfall in the United States in cities and towns off the Gulf Coast this upcoming August 2025, I would like to invite writers, artists, thinkers, organizers, teachers, and students to submit an abstract for the following special issue "The Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf Coast Legacy: 20 Years of Community & Technology Reflections, Lessons, and Future Making" While commemorations of immense grief, loss, change, and tragedy do not always elicit positive or pleasant emotions, it is through these periods that we can learn the most about what works, what doesn't and where do or did we go from (t)here. *Theme and Scope:* This call aims to provide a platform for diverse voices and interdisciplinary scholarship to contribute to the ongoing dialogue about one of the most significant events in recent U.S. history. We welcome submissions that challenge, expand, and deepen our understanding of the lessons and legacies of this pivotal moment in time. Strong proposals will touch on a range of topics related to the Gulf Coast region, populations, and environments affected by Hurricane Katrina or building off lessons learned during and after the storm, including but not limited to: - Data Collection and Management - Early Warning and Decision Support Systems - Communication and Social MediaResponse and Coordination - Survival and Recovery - Ethics and Privacy Concerns - Climate Change Realities and Predictions - Education, Training, and Remembrance - Policy and Governance - Disaster Impact on Human and Non-human wellbeing I am beyond excited to work as editor with JCLIS on this very important special issue and I hope you will join me in submitting, sharing, or providing reviews for this endeavor.
