Ideas for topics for "Emerging Technology in New Media" Module
Hi All, I am involved in teaching a course on Emerging Technology in New Media (a fairly broad topic) and I thought I'd reach out to the list and see does anyone have any interesting (up-to-date-ish) readings/books/ideas for lecture topics for a course like this? It is a final year undergrad module so can be reasonably advanced, Regards, David
There might be one or more chapters of The Oxford Handbook of Internet Studies that would help. See: http://ukcatalogue.oup.com/product/9780199589074.do#.UlKBGySDWHk On 7 Oct 2013, at 10:31, David Crowley wrote:

Following Bill's excellent lead ... It seems that the ethical dimensions of new media are increasingly important as well as increasingly complex: so this is a nice occasion to announce on the air list that The second edition of _Digital Media Ethics_, is now available from Polity: http://www.politybooks.com/book.asp?ref=0745656056 Would be happy to share sample chapters, including introduction and overview, if interested. hi david some of the stuff covered in this 'social media campaigning' module might be of interest, as it pivots on the affordances of emerging tech (crowd stuff, making etc): http://www.internetartizans.co.uk/socialmediacampaigning there's links to the urls for each lecture e.g. https://www.diigo.com/list/danmcquillan/socmediacamp-lecture-3 it's an ma module but for a broad range of non-tech students (branding, politics, cultural entrepreneurship) so should be ok for final year undergrads. cheers dan On 7 October 2013 10:31, David Crowley <david.crowley@deri.org> wrote:

Interesting and up-to-date ideas... Take them to see "The Fifth Estate" when it comes out (depending when it comes out in your part of the world). http://www.thefifthestatemovie.com/ If not the movie, Wikileaks and Snowden. Also, many writings on Aaron Swartz (and IIRC a great Lessig talk) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Swartz I think the Lessig talk is here: http://www.law.harvard.edu/news/2013/02/lessig-chair-lecture-aarons-laws.htm... Hello, David - Geert Lovink and Miriam Rausch's edited collection Unlike Us is a free book (available online) with many essays exploring social media, but I think more appropriate for the "emerging" aspect, alternatives to social media. These essays get at the question of how to build new systems when one is critical of the old. The download page for the book is here: http://networkcultures.org/wpmu/portal/publication/unlike-us-reader-social-m... . There are several formats (PDF, epub). David: I took a graduate course on the Social Consequences of New Media (where we viewed a DVD each week in addition to our readings) and am now working on my thesis about social media. I've been reading and highly recommend Don Tapscott's books: http://dontapscott.com While I haven't cracked it, I just purchased: I Know Who You Are and I Saw What You Did: Social Networks and the Death of Privacy by Lori Andrews (Jan 1, 2013) http://tinyurl.com/o4y6uf8 As for new DVD, I am looking to get my hands on the following: Terms and Conditions May Apply http://tacma.net/tacma.php While these are older, if you haven't seen them, they may be something worthwhile for your class: "Erasing David": http://erasingdavid.com "Zero Day": http://zerodaydoc.com CBC's "Web Warriors": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34cwMz3HZ8Q BBC's "How Hackers Changed the World": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rj35GguOAGE Sincerely, Christine Badowski Master's student, North Central College http://www.linkedin.com/in/chrisbadowski http://chicagopublicart.blogspot.com @chrisbadowski
