Re: [Air-L] Air-L Digest, Vol 80, Issue 24
Hi Federica, Check out the 'projects' page on this collaboratively developed spreadsheet, which was an open call for resources (articles, people, events, projects) that explore how digital media is being (or could be) used to communicate or meaningfully mobilize action on environmental sustainability / climate change. http://tinyurl.com/5repvx6 best, Susanna Susanna Haas Lyons Public Participation Specialist | America*Speaks*<http://www.americaspeaks.org/>Senior Network Associate MA Candidate 2011, Institute for Resources, Environment & Sustainability<http://www.ires.ubc.ca/>, UBC Board Member, Canadian Community for Dialogue & Deliberation<http://www.c2d2.ca/> susanna.haas.lyons@gmail.com twitter.com/zannalyons 604-345-0840

Dear AIR-listers,
I am a Phd student in Multimedia Communication at the University of Udine (Italy) interested in studying citizen engagement in environmental controversies, especially when online tools are somehow involved in the participatory processes. Could you maybe suggest me some interesting study cases I can have look at? If any of you is interested in discussing those issues, please write to me at kitamani82@hotmail.com Thank you in advance for your assistance! Federica

End of Air-L Digest, Vol 80, Issue 24 *************************************
Dear colleagues, MIOIR at the Univ of Manchester and HIVOS the Netherlands Souheast Regional Office are organising the screening of the first documentary movie on social media nad social movement in Indonesia, and launch of the research report on the similar topic. Please pencil this in your diary if this is of your interest. Please also forward this invitation to any relevant lists that you are subscribed to. Many thanks, yanuar --------------------- Documentary screening and report launching Social Media Innovations and Civic Engagement in Indonesia 4 April 2011, 3-5pm (coffee and tea available from 2.30pm) Welcome, opening remark and introduction by: Professor Jakob Edler, Executive Director, MIOIR, University of Manchester, United Kingdom Ms. Shita Laksmi, Interim Director, HIVOS Southeast Asia Regional Office, Jakarta, Indonesia Today, the Internet and social media like Facebook and Twitter have become new convivial tools for civil society groups and communities to effectively manage and expand their activism, addressing new societal challenges. Indeed, civil society is now facing new array of challenges, from the `traditional' issues of promotion of democracy and development, to human rights and freedom of information. This has forced them to innovate through different endeavours - one of which is by adopting the Internet and social media. This is no exception for the Indonesian civil society. Nevertheless, systematic research into the use of Internet and social media innovations in civil society is fairly limited, let alone in the developing contexts like Indonesia. As a result, not only do we know little about patterns of use and adoption of the technologies; we do not know the extent to which the processes involved in such use and how this impacts upon civil society organisational functions. It seems natural that such research would be not only academically important in itself, but also beneficial both for policy and practical purposes, especially when taking into account the roles that Indonesia plays in the societal development in Southeast Asia region, which is one of the fastest-growing regions in the world, and its technological uptake. This motivated HIVOS and MIOIR to join forces and conduct a research into the use of social media in the Indonesian civil society groups and communities. The research was led by Dr. Yanuar Nugroho and has now concluded. The report, titled "Citizens in @ction" will be launched in this event, along with the screening of a documentary movie on the same topic, tiled "linimas(s)a" or "timeliner(s)". The movie, which was also co-funded by HIVOS and has just been completed in early March 2011, is the first documentary on social media and social movement in Indonesia. Trailer with English subtitle is available [1]http://kalamkata.org/2011/02/20/linimassa-program-film-dokumenter/ We cordially invite you to attend to this event. Participation is free places are limited, so please register by emailing to [2]yanuar.nugroho@manchester.ac.uk. The screening and launch will be held from 3.00-5.00pm (coffee/tea available from 2.30pm) on 4 April 2011 in the Conference Room 10.04/10.05 of the Harold Hankins Building (building no.30 on campus map: [3]http://www.manchester.ac.uk/medialibrary/maps/campusmap.pdf; entrance via first floor of Precinct Centre opposite the old Post Office; see: [4]http://www.mbs.ac.uk/aboutus/mbs-harold.aspx for location, travel details and directions). http://www.universalrejection.org/ A taste: The founding principle of the Journal of Universal Rejection (JofUR) is rejection. Universal rejection. That is to say, all submissions, regardless of quality, will be rejected. Despite that apparent drawback, here are a number of reasons you may choose to submit to the JofUR: - You can send your manuscript here without suffering waves of anxiety regarding the eventual fate of your submission. You know with 100% certainty that it will not be accepted for publication. - There are no page-fees. - You may claim to have submitted to the most prestigious journal (judged by acceptance rate). - The JofUR is one-of-a-kind. Merely submitting work to it may be considered a badge of honor. - You retain complete rights to your work, and are free to resubmit to other journals even before our review process is complete. - Decisions are often (though not always) rendered within hours of submission.
