survey creation tools or sites?
Hello all, I'm getting ready to create a survey and would like to hear from those that have some experience using sites/tools like Survey Monkey, Zoomerang, etc.. Which of these kinds of tools do you think are best and, are there any decent free, ideally open source, versions out there? Thanks! Kim De Vries -- http://else-if-then.blogspot.com
Hi, I take this opportunity to point at a survey software I developed as part of my thesis. It is released as open source, so it can be installed, modified, and used for free. There is also a running instance at http://www.survey4all.org where one can apply for an account for free to take a closer look and run surveys. It comes with a comfortable online-HTML-Editor and can handle most of the common tasks necessary for running surveys. To get an impression of the ability of the software, take a look at the poster presentation held at the General Online Research Conference this year: http://www.survey4all.org/poster.pdf regards, Albert Am Mittwoch, den 02.04.2008, 10:02 -0700 schrieb Kimberly De Vries:

another good open-source software implementation is LimeSurvey: http://limesurvey.org/ nice intuitive and user-friendly back-end. jkd Albert Greinoecker wrote:

Long ago, I used to build mine in PHP Surveyor. I was checking whether it had been discontinued or was still working and now I see it's been renamed to LimeSurvey, so I join Jacob voting for LimeSurvey. Pretty easy PHP+MySQL to install and custom at your own will. Easy to use if you're not fond of coding, easy to personalize if you are. It would be great if those who have posted would add a short description of the software they used and their experiences to the wiki page for this (oft-asked) question: http://wiki.aoir.org/index.php?title=Online_Surveys Best, Alex On Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 2:44 PM, Ismael Peña-López <ictlogist@ictlogy.net> wrote:

As the author, I'm partial to http://birat.net. I've not reviewed LimeSurvey but PHPSurveyor which was its previous name was impressive. I don't like Survey Monkey, Zoomerang, etc as they don't follow the standard HTML interface and have restrictions that include costs. Since I use Moodle for my courses, I use the Moodle Questionnaire module (a third-party module available from the main Moodle site) for anything in-house. If I want it to be generally available, I use phpESP, which is the software the module is based on. It's free as in both beer and speech, fairly easy to install and configure and has a simple graphic interface for survey creators. It's also pretty good at processing results - you can do item analysis, for example, though there are no advanced statistic involved. Of course all of this implies that you have access to a server which provides you with PHP and MySQL.
