In addition to the already excellent list, I would suggest Pavel Curtis's "Mudding: Social Phenomena in Text-based Virtual Realities" and Fred Turner's "Where the Counterculture Met the New Economy: The WELL and the Origins of Virtual Community" (the latter pairs really well with Rheingold, for obvious reasons).
