Upcoming conferences/publications of interest
I'm compiling a list of upcoming conferences or publications of interest to be sent to CIT section members of the American Sociological Association. If any of you know of any upcoming conferences that might be of interest to sociologists studying technology issues, or any publications or CFP, please send them my way so I can add them to the list! Thanks a lot! Katie
Hi Katie (and all) - this is a great idea. I would like to see a bit more on gaming and virtual spaces: -Upcoming WIGI Events -The Balancing Act: Game Industry Careers and Quality of Life September 16, Seattle Washington http://www.womeningamesinternational.org/register.html Finding a balance between quality of life and successful career in the game industry can be extremely challenging. It can also be a major obstacle for women who are considering the game industry as a career. At this conference, we will identify quality of life issues and discuss methods for coping or balancing the demands of the industry and a healthy life. -Austin Game Conference The Austin Game Conference (AGC) - now in its 4th year - is the definitive conference for online and networked game development, including massively multiplayer online games, casual games, online PC and console games. http://www.gameconference.com/ -Second Life Community Convention We're pleased to announce that the second annual Second Life Community Convention will occur in the Cowell Theater at the Fort Mason Center in San Francisco, California, from August 18th-20th. We have a preliminary framework of the weekends' events, and a great team assembled to bring it to you! http://www.slconvention.com/ -International DiGRA Conference Sept 24-28th Tokyo Games are everywhere. On subways, we see people playing Tetris with cell-phones. On the street and in restaurants, kids play with GameBoys and other portable devices. At home, we gather around the console or collaborate with a family member to take out a monster in a multiplayer game. At offices, we spend spare time playing PC games. Our elderly are whiling away free hours playing online games. Games are truly everywhere, and increasingly, part of more and more people's lives. http://www.digra.org/ ******************************************** Tracy L. M. One group that might be of interest is the Media Ecology Association, which holds an annual convention (see preliminary CFP copied below), and also has a print journal, Explorations in Media Ecology, that welcomes submissions on issues related to technology and society. Details about the journal are available at http://www.media-ecology.org/publications/journal.html Regards, Janet Sternberg, Ph.D. Assistant Professor and Associate Chair Department of Communication and Media Studies Fordham University Bronx, NY 10458-9993 USA ******************************** Preliminary Call for Papers The Eighth Annual Convention of the Media Ecology Association in Mexico City "Technology and Transformation" *June 6-10, 2007* Featuring speakers from Canada, the United States, Spain, and Latin America, including *Eric McLuhan*, *Jay Bolter*, and *Katherine Hayles*. With the aim of fostering an academic tradition begun with the New York, St. Louis, and Toronto schools of media ecology, the /Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Estado de México/ invites your participation, as presenters or attendants, in the Eighth Annual Convention of the Media Ecology Association, to be celebrated in Mexico City from June 6-10, 2007. The /Tecnológico de Monterrey/ was founded in 1943 by a group of Mexican entrepreneurs and executives. It is a private educational institution, independent from any political or religious group. The /Tecnólogico de Monterrey/ system has a nationwide presence and also extends its educational services abroad to other Latin American countries and other cities of the world. The convention coordinators and organizing committee invite the submission of papers, roundtable and panel discussions, workshops, films, multimedia presentations, performances, and any other proposals relating to all aspects of the media ecology tradition founded by McLuhan, Mumford, Ong, Postman, and others. As Neil Postman asserted, a new technology does not merely add something to a culture; it transforms everything. The transformation is ecological and the consequences of the change are always fast, often unpredictable, and largely irreversible. And, as Marshall McLuhan reminded us, the technology reshapes and restructures patterns of social interdependence along with every aspect of our personal lives. Join us to continue this dialogue about "Technology and Transformation," and its impact on society, from the media ecology perspective.** Completed papers are eligible for the Top Paper Award and Linda Elson Scholar Award for Top Student Paper. Please indicate your interest in competing for either award on a separate title page with full contact information, making sure to remove all identifying information from the text pages. Competitive papers should be formatted in accordance with the fifth edition of the /Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association/. The MEA is an international organization, and our 2007 convention is a defining moment for us, as it will our first annual meeting held outside the United States. Please join us as we celebrate and commemorate this important rite of passage. Conference attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in special guided bilingual tours to Teotihuacán, site of the some of largest pyramids in Mexico and one of the most extraordinary archeological sites in the Western Hemisphere, and to downtown Mexico City, including the major cultural and historic sites in the Centro Histórico (The/ Zócalo /or Constitution Square, Metropolitan Cathedral, the ruins of the Great Temple of the Aztecs, the National Palace with its murals by Diego Rivera), the monuments of Reforma Avenue, and the museums of Chapultepec Park (the Archeaology Museum, Museum of Modern Art, Rufino Tamayo Museum of Contemporary Art, and the National History Museum, located in the famed Castle of Chapultepec). One that might escape your attention is the 10th Anniversary Conference of Information, Communication and Society (iCS). See: http://www.york.ac.uk/res/siru/ICSConference.htm On 19 Jul 2006, at 17:45, Katie Bessiere wrote:

One site that might be useful to many of you is the website of the International Calendar of Conferences. They claim it is about Information Sciences but they list many that would overlap to other disciplines. It turned out to be that they list all the conferences that I usually attend to plus many others that I was not familiar with. They also provide the possibility of subscribing to their feed via RSS. Enjoy! http://icisc.neasist.org/index HGZ -----Original Message----- From: air-l-bounces@listserv.aoir.org [mailto:air-l-bounces@listserv.aoir.org] On Behalf Of William Dutton Sent: Thursday, July 20, 2006 3:38 AM To: air-l@listserv.aoir.org Subject: Re: [Air-l] Upcoming conferences/publications of interest One that might escape your attention is the 10th Anniversary Conference of Information, Communication and Society (iCS). I suggest you to check EventSeer, an extremely interesting project and resource http://eventseer.net/ "EventSeer is a searchable library of computer science events. We currently index calls for papers (CFPs), proposals, demos, posters, participation, etc. for conferences, journals, books, tutorials, as well as any other relevant event. Main features * Updated with the latest CFPs on a daily basis * Automated extraction of important submission deadlines * Filterable list of upcoming deadlines * Searchable CFP archive * CFP RSS feed * Add upcoming deadlines to your personal Google Calendar" Here is an example search for "sociology" http://eventseer.net/search/search.py/search?s=sociology Unluckly, it is not possible to subscribe to RSS feeds for specific queries, but I use PontFish for this http://www.ponyfish.com/ and it works great! I think EventSeer is a great tool for keeping up to date with the hundreds of conferences available nowadays which you can flood with your incredibly clever papers! ;-) Hope it helps. Paolo Massa
