Re: [Air-L] assigning students their college/university wikipedia page
to all those who have posted their tips, ideas, and experiences with having your students work with wikipedia ... thank you! within 24 hours, i feel much more prepared for the assignment i'll be giving next week. thanks. in particular, i am still looking for any examples of having students work on THEIR OWN UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE wikipedia page. one student in jason mittell's class ( see http://justtv.wordpress.com/2007/03/16/wiki-lessons/ ), who along with jason was able to construct a wikipedia page for Middlebury College hockey team, seems closest to what i'm looking for. again, thanks for all the ideas and i hope to share some success (or not so) stories in the near future. david silver http://silverinsf.blogspot.com
Hi. My students worked on wikipedia pages for West Virginia University. Here's the syllabus: http://www.clc.wvu.edu:8080/clc/Members/sbaldwin/courses/engl306f08 and the assignment: "Knowledge 2.0/wikipedia authoring, due Sep 16. There are two parts to this project, both on Wikipedia. First, individually complete two open tasks on Wikipedia. Second, with a group of two or three other students, write a new article on Wikipedia. Deciding on the topic of your tasks and article: 1) choose two different tasks that interest you; ideally they relate to the class topics and reading; 2) for the articles, you may either choose a topic related to the class readings or another topic that you decide on as a group (perhaps something relating to WVU?)." Not all did wikipedia pages related to the university, but several did. One group "chose to write a Wiki page on the Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism at West Virginia University. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perley_Isaac_Reed_School_of_Journalism" (from the group's blog page). A second group worked on a page for the university mascot, the Mountaineer. http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Virginia_Mountaineer. I believe the page has been radically revised since the group worked on it. In a previous version of this assignment, for an earlier class, students created a page for the university library.
