Platform Workers - Collectivities and Organizing (in-person event in Toronto)
The Centre for Culture & Technology in Toronto presents an in-person conversation between Jennifer Scott (Gig Workers United) and Moira Weigel (Northeastern University) focusing on the collective and organizing challenges of platform workers. There is a myth that those who work through digital platforms would be unorganized, yet recent history has shown this to be a lie. There is a lot of evidence of workers' struggles in various sectors (delivery, ride-hailing, micro-workers, tech workers, care work, creators, streamers, e-commerce) around the world. February 6, 6PM Together in a conversation moderated by Rafael Grohmann (University of Toronto), we explore several questions: * What working conditions have platform workers been subjected to in recent years? * What has already been built in terms of solidarity among workers? * What is needed to push and guarantee decent work? * What alternatives are on the horizon in relation to public policies? Workers, unions and worker collectives from all sectors are welcome. This Monday Night Seminar is organized by the Centre's [1]Selfhood, Identities, and Collectivities of Platform Workers Working Group. About the speakers Jennifer Scott is a 5-year bike courier who has been delivering on apps in Toronto. She was a member of the Foodsters United CUPW drive to unionize gig workers in Toronto and Mississauga which successfully won the right to unionize with 89% of workers voting YES for their union. She is the President of Gig Workers United CUPW, the worker led community local of CUPW organizing to unionize gig workers in the GTA and beyond. Moira Weigel is an Assistant Professor of Communications Studies at Northeastern University and cofounder of Logic Magazine. Her most recent book, co-edited with Ben Tarnoff, is Voices from the Valley: Tech Workers Talk About What They Do—and How They Do It (2020).
