Hi, I might do a survey for an association, i.e. on a low budget. Is there anywhere a free or low-cost survey questionnaire programme with whom you can write & format survey questionnaires ? Either for the web or just for paper and pencil surveys ? And in particular, besides the info about a programme can you recommand one ? A number of our grad students are using Survey Monkey (www.surveymonkey.com) for posting web surveys. I have heard mixed things about the extent of its data analysis components and flexibility with layout, but those I know working with it say it seems to basically function well. I have a colleague who is very excited about SurveyPro, but it is much more expensive. Interested to hear others' recommendations and experiences. Nancy

I've used the web-based survey tools from http://www.surveyz.com (owned by Qualtrics, http://www.qualtrics.com). It was easy to use, and cheap for me as an academic at $199/year. JS On Nov 15, 2006, at 9:34 AM, Frank Thomas wrote:

I used QuestionPro.Com for web-only survey generation. Was free for 6 months for academic use, and I presume their costs for other uses are reasonable. The only downside was that IMO their web interface was a bit quirky and their site makes it a bit cumbersome to work in/rearrange question branches, but I managed to move through it well enough earlier this year to meet my needs. But...I was annoyed that I had to fork over some extra $$ for an account upgrade to conduct "advanced analysis" (e.g., cross-tabs) but that wasn't for a long period of time, so I just bit the bullet and paid for a bit. One would think cross-tabs are a basic sort of survey analysis. At least I did. SurveyMonkey seems to have a large following, too -- but I've not used it. -rf On 11/15/06 11:34 AM, "Frank Thomas" <news.ftr@free.fr> wrote:

Do any/none of these allow you to download (or otherwise grep) the data and analyze it offline/elsewhere? -eg

SurveyMonkey allows you to export in a number of formats. That's what I've had to do to run stats, generate graphs, etc. for all of the surveys in which I've been involved that utilized SurveyMonkey. Kevin
surveygizmo allows: CSV Export (comma seperated file - .csv) Tab Export (tab seperated file - .tab/.txt) Export Questions - Text Layout Export Wizard (csv with options) M On 11/15/06, Ellis Godard <egodard@csun.edu> wrote:

The open source http://birat.net survey system also allows export of survey information in a variety of formats. I should know, I wrote the system. I looked into several of the entry forms. Several questions: - Can you branch questions ? - Can you layout the pages so that you have a limited number of questions on a page, and respondents don't get shocked when they see the number of question still to answer ? - Can you use another language than English ? - Where are the answers stored - on your server, on mine ? Thanks, Frank Charlie Balch wrote:

Hi Frank, I specifically do not branch questions as my review of the literature suggested that branching changes the commonality of the participants' experience. There is reasonable doubt that the results of essentially different surveys can be compared. Other than an exit screen, I do provide for multiple paging at this time. This would be relatively simple to implement and I am considering providing this and some other features in the next version. Other than a small authorship line at the bottom of the survey page, all survey content is created by the author of the survey. You could thus create a survey in any language you care to use. The survey design and review areas are all in English but participants would not need to see this area. Answers are stored where the survey is hosted. If you install the public domain/open source system on your server, the results will be stored on your server. You can also use my server at http://birat.net and export data as you wish. Export options include CSV and Excel. The BIRAT system is designed from the top down with a focus on academic research and exploring the possibilities inherit in Internet research. I'm very open to adding useful features and/or features that explore new possibilities exposed by the use of Internet surveys as opposed to surveys using other modalities.
