The Centre for Machine Intelligence (CMI) and the Faculty of Social Sciences at The University of Sheffield wish to recruit a Senior Lecturer in AI and In/Equality. The CMI is The University of Sheffield’s AI research centre, supported by a £3.64m investment. This position is one of four academic theme lead appointments. The successful applicant will lead the Human-Centric AI theme. The Social Research Institute (SRI) is a physical hub of research centres and networks in the Faculty of Social Sciences, including the ESRC Digital Good Network, the Urban Institute, iHuman, the Healthy Lifespan Institute and the Centre for Care. The successful candidate will work across the CMI and SRI for the first three years of the post, and will have the opportunity to engage with SRI centres and networks to develop a programme of research. After three years, you will join a Social Science School appropriate to your disciplinary background and expertise. Concern about AI discrimination and inequality underlies much current global policy and scholarly debate. These issues are central to the Human-Centric AI theme and to the mission of the CMI. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your career and lead an important stream of work within a major centre for AI research. You will have a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant field of the social sciences and experience of interdisciplinary collaboration, especially with STEM disciplines. You will have the skills to provide leadership in AI and in/equality and to work with other theme leads and the Centre Director to ensure that the CMI is at the forefront of AI research, innovation, and impact, nationally and internationally. Your teaching load during the first three years of this position will be a maximum of 20% allocated workload, to ensure that you have capacity for leadership activities. The position is supported by a PhD studentship (UK fees and stipend for 3.5 years) and a generous start-up package for travel and equipment. -- Helen Kennedy, Director, ESRC Digital Good Network <https://digitalgood.net/>, @digitalgoodnet Professor of Digital Society, @hmtk, Living With Data <https://livingwithdata.org/>, she/her Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences <https://acss.org.uk/> *LATEST PUBLICATIONS: * Challenging assumptions about the relationship between awareness of and attitudes to data uses amongst the UK public <https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/01972243.2023.2283729> (2023, w/Mark Taylor and Susan Oman, *The Information Society*) Socially meaningful transparency in data-based systems: reflections and proposals from practice <https://www.emerald.com/insight/content/doi/10.1108/JD-01-2023-0006/full/html?utm_source=smc_email_onboarding&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=apa_author_journals_access_2023-6-14> (2023, w/Jo Bates, Itzelle Medina Perea, Susan Oman, Lulu Pinney, *Journal of Documentation*) Generic visuals of Covid-19 in the news: Invoking banal belonging through symbolic reiteration <https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/13678779211061415>(2022, w/Giorgia Aiello, Chris W Anderson, Camilla Mørk Røstvik, *I**nternational Journal of Cultural Studies*.
