And this is precisely the set of tools that the makers of said tools are calling "social software." I'm definitely not arguing for this term, but that's what folks are calling them. On Sun, 20 Mar 2005, Cathy Ma wrote:
Hi all,
Seems that it's hard to find a new term that embraces all the meanings of all the possible computer mediated communication devices/means/habits...etc as mentioned, but really, what are they?
feel free to add on:
- emails - instant messengers (IMs) - web-based socializing tools, such as * friends of friends sites (e.g. friendster, orkut) * socializing bookmarking archive (e.g. del.icio.us.com) * forums * photo-sharing communities (e.g. hello, flickr, ofoto) - web-based publishing tools *blogs *wikis
What else I missed?
best, cathy

And I found myself saying -- and my PPTs reading -- "Internet" -- but then verbally qualifying by saying, "well I really don't mean the traditional email Internet, but also IM, chat, lists, video, etc." (add your favoriteincluding Usenet and BBS).
What to call it?
I usually use:
- "Internet applications", for those things that specifically require the Internet. (Most of the ones you listed.)
- "media applications", as the more general class of things that may but don't always need the Internet -- even if they increasingly do. (Like mobile media applications.)
