Digital Rights Management promises novel business models for the distribution of and access to all kinds of digital content - from music and movies to text and software - while ensuring that the interests of rights holders are protected. Over the last year, DRM systems have been introduced in the U.S. as well as in various European markets with great success. Increasingly, open standards-based DRM systems play a vital role in the mobile sector. In autumn 2003, the German Parliament implemented the European Copyright Directive of 2001, establishing the legal framework for DRM systems. Further reforms of European and German copyright law are imminent.
Thus, the time is ripe for the 3rd Digital Rights Management Conference 2005. This conference is the third in a series of leading DRM conferences in Europe. It will summarise the present debate about DRM on a national and international level. It will also create an interdisciplinary forum to discuss economic, business, legal, technical and scientific questions as well as policy issues surrounding DRM and the future of digital content. Representatives of the media and IT industries, governments, user associations, libraries, collecting societies, as well as artists, attorneys, scientists, privacy and consumer protection advocates from Germany, other European countries and the U.S. will discuss controversial issues and proposed solutions in the areas of Digital Rights Management, Trusted Computing and alternative compensation systems.
