One thing that came out of the discussion of AoIR's 2004 inquiry into whether or not or how to have a journal (a working group that Monica Murero chaired) was how much international attitudes toward publishing and publishing venues vary. Several untenured Americans (both profs and students) said that they would never publish in an online AoIR journal because they wouldn't get enough credit for it. People from Australia found that absurd in the context of their own experiences. As usual, AoIR finds itself trying to balance competing perspectives and needs amongst disciplinary, methodological, and national ways of doing things.
