SCHOOL OF PUBLIC AND INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS
GOVERNMENT AND INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS PROGRAM
VIRGINIA TECH
Theories of Globalization
The Program on Government and International Affairs (GIA) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, focused on the theories and processes of globalization. Candidates should have strong, broad training in social, political, or cultural theory, and be able to work within an interdisciplinary setting with other colleagues in the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) on the School’s Master of Public and International Affairs degree as well as the Public and International Affairs stream within an existing college PhD program that GIA now manages. In addition, this hire will collaborate with a new cross-college doctoral program in the humanities and social sciences, ASPECT (Alliance for Social Political Ethical and Cultural Thought). Both of these interdisciplinary organizations address contemporary political challenges, cultural conflicts, and social problems. In particular, we would be interested in individuals who take a comparative approach to broad systemic challenges posed by globalization, including cultural conflict, economic development, state building, institutional democratization, collective security, or rapid urbanization. A Ph.D. in sociology, political science, cultural anthropology, human geography, international studies, or a closely related discipline is required for appointment as an Assistant Professor.
To be considered complete, applications must include a full c.v., three letters of recommendation, a sample of written work, and teaching evaluations. Applicants also should submit a cover letter that addresses how they position their work in relation to globalization theory, a statement about their current and future research agendas, and an overview of their teaching experience in this area to demonstrate their potential for excellence in research, teaching, and service.
Interested candidates should apply online at www.jobs.vt.edu and arrange for references to send letters to: Dr, Timothy W. Luke, Chair, Globalization Theory Search Committee, c/o Ms. Krystal Wright, SPIA, 110 Architecture Annex (0113), Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA 24061; Phone: (540) 231-2291 or send them electronically to Krystal Wright (krystal@vt.edu), Faculty Search Assistant, SPIA. The search will remain open until the position is filled, but to be assured full consideration, applications should be received by January 21, 2005.
Virginia Tech has a strong commitment to diversity and seeks a broad spectrum of candidates, including women, minorities, and people with disabilities. Individuals with disabilities desiring accommodations in the application process should notify the Chair of the Search Committee or the Virginia Tech Relay Service, 1-800-828-1120.
