Dear colleagues, We invite you to join us next week for two public panels at the "Reimagining AI for Environmental Justice and Creativity" workshop that takes place on October 23 and 24, 12:00 pm EDT, on Zoom and at the Bond House on our main campus in Charlottesville, VA. The two-day event will explore the dynamics of power and trust, in technology and governments, from perspectives not always included in the deployment, regulation and policies centered on artificial intelligence. We will discuss the possibilities to reimagine (or contain) AI from the margins, questioning the narrative of its inescapability and what public interest AI systems might look like -- and if such systems are even possible. The workshop will cover topics such as creativity, heritage, the right to the city and cultural policy on the first day, and environmental justice, climate crisis and the materiality of big data on the second day. One of the main outcomes of this conversation will be an open access publication featuring short essays from all participants that will be available in English and Spanish. The panels are free and open to the public but require registration for either in-person or remote participation: https://karshinstitute.virginia.edu/events/reimagining-ai-environmental-just....
