Thanks for the notes and resources shared. 1) There is something interesting in Hansen etc book on page 34 which speaks of vertices: "Often they represent people or social structures... At other times they represent content such as web pages, keyword tags or videos." The research I am actually doing involves more the keyword tag categories rather than people (whose identity as declared especially in YouTube is a bit fluid). Have you had experience in an analysis of social media network with content key word tag as vertices? 2) While it is possible to speak of difference between SNA and analysis of social network, is there a possiblity of convergence for them too. What would be the common elements in this convergence if at all it is possible? Thanks again. Norman
About the beginning of SNA you can take a look in Hansen,Shneiderman and Smith - Analyzing Social Media Networks with Node XL . According them, the social science roots of SNA can be found in the 1800s in Comte and Simmels 's work . But the core concepts and methods of modern SNA date from the 1930s with the work of Jacob Moreno. ( See "Moreno, J.L. (1934) . Who shall survive ?" - Its an analysis of relationships among members of a football team.)

dear Norman,
one temptative answer: analysis of social networks often stands for analysis of ONLINE social network. social network analysis (SNA) does not limit itself to online networs. SNA conceives its object as made by nodes and links and use graph and maths tecniques to describe or model such networks of nodes and links.
analysis of social networks does not limit itself to SNA as the only tool to understand its object, it could include data mining, traditional statistics... of course, if you model your online social network as a graph with nodes (users) and links (friendship) and you calculate centrality measures on it, then you are doing SNA inside your analysis of the social network.

Dear AIR list members,
I would really appreciate help in finding additional referenced dealing with the differences and/or converegence betweek social network analysis and analysis of social networks. One such reference could be the work published in 2008 by psychologists Cheryl _Coyl and Heather Vaughn "Social Networking: Communication Revolution or Evolution?" wherein they confirmed, "social networking was not created in the age of the internet but existed even before".
Thank you.
