Jerry! Very glad you reached out the listserv, as your dissertation topic is very much in line with my own dissertation work on the intersection of hacking, disability, and youth. Does anyone know of any articles that address using a web discussion board/forum (a private one of course) as a focus group tool? Specifically, I intend a one time board that is only set up and used for a focus group with invitees. I am also looking for a good discussion board service that would useful as a focus group type instrument.

I am a PhD student at Syracuse University and I have been a lurker on this listserv for a while. I am in the beginning stages of writing my dissertation proposal and I need to determine the feasibility of my research in terms of recruitment. I am interested in the do-it-yourself (DIY) practices of persons with disabilities. More specifically, I am interested in exploring the ways in which persons with disabilities address technological, environmental, social, economic, or various other forms of inaccessibility and challenges resulting from functional impairment via their own unique practices, adaptations, modifications, and innovations. I would like to know if there are any makerspaces, hacker communities, or conferences where persons with disabilities come together to engage in and/or discuss accessibility hacking, making, or DIY activities? Does anyone know if these communities or venues exist? I am familiar with several online communities where people share and discu ss their own DIY efforts but I want to know if similar communities exist offline.

Focus groups are included in the book, "Online Interviewing," by Nalita James and Hugh Busher, published 2009 by SAGE. I am still working my way though it, but the book focuses on asynchronous and synchronous text-based interviewing.

Enabled By Design is UK-based. This is their first such gathering in the U.S. to my knowledge. I think their first design-a-thon was last year. But maybe the folks behind it will have more leads for you.

The College of Arts & Letters at Stevens Institute of Technology seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Science & Technology Studies (STS) beginning fall 2014. Candidates must have completed a Ph.D. in STS or a related field by August 1, 2014.
While the area of specialization for this position is open, we are especially interested in someone who has both research and teaching expertise in at least two of the following areas: science communication; healthcare policy; environmentalism; risk studies and cognitive theory; media studies; technical writing; emerging technologies. Strong preference will be given to candidates who have a record of accomplishment in or demonstrate a potential for the fields of public engagement and/or the digital humanities.
