Hi I even got so tired of inconsistencies in Kress & Leeuwen, that I wrote this article http://www.emeraldinsight.com/journals.htm?articleid=1881607 Niels Windfeld Lund, (2010) "Document, text and medium: concepts, theories and disciplines", Journal of Documentation, Vol. 66 Iss: 5, pp.734 - 749 and yes, document-approach can be more than exciting than most people expect ! Don't let the title put you off - it's an excellent primer in design and communication. If you are specifically looking at issues of content writing and design, Redish's Letting Go of the Words is fantastic: http://www.amazon.com/Letting-Go-Words-Interactive-Technologies/dp/012369486.... It went over well with my undergrads and masters students, and we used it as a resource in industry. Hi
This is the second time I use Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen's "Multimodal Discourse" (http://www.amazon.com/Multimodal-Discourse-Gunther-Kress/dp/0340608773) in my web design and web aesthetics class (introductory level). The students (non-natives, but quite capable users of English) keep complaining about convoluted language and dense ways of explaining.
Are there alternatives to this book which cover about the same topics, and have the same depth, but are easier accessible? Or are there any additional texts which help understanding once Kress is mandatory
reading?
Thanks, - Daniel
