Hello to everybody In Turkey a few NGOs went on strike against SOPA. I copied a link, so you can see the protest. https://yenimedya.wordpress.com/ -- Prof.Dr. Mutlu Binark Baskent Universitesi Iletisim Fakultesi Radyo-Tv. ve Sinema Blm. Baglıca Kampusu Eskisehir Yolu 20.km. 06530 Ankara Tel: (312) 246 6652-53 Fax: (312) 246 66 57
Another dimension of all of this - though one not so apparent to me via "the media" while I was in the States over holidays and for a recent conference, but certainly articulated on this side of the pond - are the risks of such legislation for giving one country excessive power of the use of the Internet as a global medium. It would be interesting to see - if only for the sake of polling, rather than necessarily riling up debate (who has time - we're researchers...) - what different perspectives are apparent to listmembers living and working outside the U.S. Borders, and how far they may reflect not simply national political agendas, but also distinctive culturally-variable norms, practices, communicative preferences, etc. Just curious - in any event, thanks for the link. charles (obviously not going on email strike ...)

Watching this issue in recent weeks, I really think the various public responses from Congresscritters and the Hollywood cartels about those who challenge these pieces of legislation are beginning to reek of desparation and/or sheer ignorance. The tone in tech policy circles over SOPA/PIPA makes the tone surrounding the enactment of DMCA 12 years ago look downright tranquil by comparison. (Disclosure: My personal site is participating in the protest today. -- rick)
SOPA protests shut down Web sites

This is what happens when you make the Internet mad.
On Wednesday, a group of technology companies is planning to stage an unusual form of protest: The firms are shutting down their own popular Web sites for a day to show their unhappiness with two Internet-regulation bills grinding through Congress. They argue that the bills would impose huge regulatory costs and stifle innovation on the Web.
