Dear colleagues, Purdue University, Sorbonne Nouvelle, and University of Paris would like to extend an invitation to you and to any of your interested colleagues to the pre-ICA conference: Riding or Lashing the Waves: Regulating Media for Diversity in a Time of Uncertainty National Press Club Washington, DC, United States, May 24, 2019 https://easychair.org/cfp/RIDING19 This will be a high-density conversation with politicians, academics, and regulators from both sides of the Atlantic about an issue that preoccupies us all: can social media maintain a diverse, yet civil and trustworthy conversation? With the increase in technology over the past 20 years the term “mass media” has morphed to cover a chaotic maze of broad and narrowcast media, both local and global. The rise of new instruments of mass communication including instant messaging apps, blogging and vlogging, podcasting, live broadcasting using mobile phones, and screen capture videos have all broadened the definition of the term “mass media”. With all of this change - what are the regulatory, policy, and production rules that can make future media diverse, embracing pluralism of perspectives and ideas, user-focused and civically-responsible, while remaining profitable? In other words, what legal frameworks, organizational innovations, self-regulation ideas or technologies can be or should not be used to maintain diversity and sustainability? Please visit https://easychair.org/cfp/RIDING19 for further information and submission guidelines. We accept both abstracts and full papers. Feel free to distribute this widely.
