Yay for autocorrect that reads “gendering” as “rendering” and “racializing” as “radicalizing”… -Miriam

Greetings Caroline:
I have research on race and gender in AI and interface design that I am happy to share. My dissertation project did an analysis of the rendering and radicalizing of Microsoft’s “Ms Dewey” search engine: https://www.ideals.illinois.edu/handle/2142/46617 <https://www.ideals.illinois.edu/handle/2142/46617>. This work explores how the design of the interface impacts and shapes how users engage with it.
Additionally, I have an upcoming chapter appearing in Noble and Tyne’s (2016) “The Intersectional Internet” book titled “The Intersectional Interface” about the history and problematics of race and gender in AI and interface design. As well as a chapter in Daniels, Cottom, and Gregory’s upcoming collection “Digital Sociologies” about the gendering of the Ms Dewey search engine titled “The Ms. Dewey’ Experience': Technoculture, Gender, and Race.”
These titles should be on the shelves this calendar year, and I am happy to send a proof to anyone who would like to share in the meanwhile! (Caroline, I’m sending these your way now.)
Best, Miriam

hi all!
i'm looking for any papers and studies on how users respond to female gendered AI and bots. it doesn't have to be task oriented AI (aka helpers) but even things that are more whimsical and narrative based, like games or entertainment.
thanks! caroline
