JOB ANNOUNCEMENT Technology and Civil Liberties Fellowship September 2008 - September 2010 (full-time, legal/policy fellowship) Application Deadline: February 15, 2008 or until filled JOB TITLE: Technology and Civil Liberties Fellow REPORTS TO: Technology and Civil Liberties Policy Director The ACLU of Northern California is pleased to offer a new two-year (September 2008 - September 2010) Technology and Civil Liberties Fellowship to help develop legal and policy papers about emerging technologies and implement an innovative campaign to educate consumers of all ages, policymakers, and businesspeople about privacy and free speech rights. Technologies are continually being developed that present new opportunities for consumers. Consumers understandably are attracted by services that may be more convenient or affordable than traditional options. However, many individuals are not able to make informed choices about whether or not to use a new service, pressure companies to develop more privacy-protective alternatives, or spur government officials to ensure that legal protections keep pace with innovations, because they do not know that they are often paying for a product not just in dollars, but also with their personal information, privacy, and free speech. As new services increasingly monitor and record the personal information and activities of consumers, more and more private information can be accessed and used by the company, third parties, and the government in ways that individuals never envisioned, intended, or desired. The Technology and Civil Liberties Fellow will play a primary role in a dynamic new campaign to educate consumers, policymakers, and businesspeople about the proper balance between privacy, free speech, and emerging technologies. In 2004, the ACLU-NC became the first ACLU affiliate in the country to launch a specialized program dedicated to the intersection of privacy, free speech, and new technology. More information about the Technology and Civil Liberties Program is available at www.aclunc.org/tech <http://www.aclunc.org/tech> . The Fellow will report to ACLU-NC's Technology and Civil Liberties Policy Director, and will spend at least one day/per week in the ACLU-NC's San Jose office and otherwise work in the San Francisco office. The Fellow will also collaborate with the ACLU's legislative staff in Sacramento and the National ACLU Technology and Liberty Program.
