Hi All, I’m excited to share our new report “Covert Campaigns: Safeguarding Encrypted Messaging Platforms from Voter Manipulation <https://bhr.stern.nyu.edu/publication/safeguarding-encrypted-messaging-platforms/> .” We draw on interview data from across seventeen counties and a survey of 4,500 messaging app users across nine countries to surface mechanisms of propaganda and electoral tampering on platforms from WhatsApp to Telegram. We then present a number of technical, educational, and policy-based solutions.
