Someone may have mentioned this already in this discussion, but Margaret Wertheim's 1999 book, "The Pearly Gates of Cyberspace: A History of Space from Dante to the Internet" (New York: W.W. Norton & Co.) addresses this in an interesting historical analysis drawn from art and literature and then into the digital realm.
