Director - Consumer Privacy Project The Center for Democracy & Technology is seeking a senior legal or policy professional to lead its project on consumer privacy. The job offers a rare and exciting opportunity to shape public policy and corporate practices on one of the key issues of the digital age. CDTs Consumer Privacy Project seeks to enhance privacy on the Internet and in related technologies through legislation, regulation, sound business practices, consumer education, and privacy by design. Key goals include enactment of a baseline consumer privacy law, reform of the Privacy Act of 1974, and implementation of user-controls in standards and business practices.. DIRECTOR POSITION: The responsibilities of the Director of CDTs Consumer Privacy Project include:
Strategic planning and management of CDTs Consumer Privacy Project; Legal and policy analysis and development of policy recommendations related to consumer privacy; Outreach to the technology and related business sectors; public interest groups; academics; and other key audiences; Coordination of CDT working groups, consultations, and coalitions of diverse stakeholders (including businesses, consumer advocates, academics, and technologists); Representation before Congress, Executive Branch agencies and international policymaking bodies; Public education, media and public speaking; and Policy and technical assistance to policymakers, regulators and commercial entities. QUALIFICATIONS: This position is designed for candidates with significant experience. An ideal candidate would have
An advanced degree in law, public policy or other relevant area; A minimum of 7 10 years in relevant legal or policy positions with increasing levels of responsibility and project management experience; Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Experience with Congress, federal agencies preferred; Basic technical knowledge of Internet technologies is necessary, advanced knowledge of technology and/or technical standards and work with technical standards bodies are a plus; Demonstrated project planning and organizational skills; Demonstrated ability to manage diverse coalitions; Commitment to CDTs public interest mission and An entrepreneurial and collaborative working style. The position offers lots of autonomy within a supportive team environment.
