Open science represents a radical transformation of the way in which scientific research is conducted and of its system of evaluation, in short, open science constitutes a genuine paradigmatic shift with respect to the prevailing system (Anglada & Abadal, 2018). At the beginning of the 2000s, initiatives were first undertaken taken in relation to such practices as open access, open educational resources (OER), open data (both administrative – open government data – and research – scientific data), open peer review, citizen science and new metrics, in addition to other practices that showed a specific awareness of openness in such areas as publication, data collection and the review process. However, each of these elements has tended to follow its own path of implementation and evolution, largely in isolation of the other elements. For this reason, the concept of open science seeks to take this general movement one step further and to broaden the perspective on how research works by integrating all these elements in a global and strategic vision of how we can face the challenges posed by science. The European Commission has, unquestionably, taken the lead in promoting this new model and in placing it firmly on the global agenda with the publication, in the first place of, the concept paper “Digital Science in Horizon 2020” (2013), followed most notably by its recommendations on access to and preservation of scientific information (European Commission, 2018) and the creation of its open science portal (European Commission, 2019) which brings together in one site news, events and documents related to open science. La ciencia abierta supone una transformación radical de la manera de llevar a cabo la investigación científica y de cómo transformar su sistema de evaluación, en síntesis, todo un cambio de paradigma respecto del actual sistema (Anglada, Abadal, 2018). A principios de la década de 2000 se visualizan ya las iniciativas relacionadas con el acceso abierto, con los recursos educativos abiertos (REA), los datos abiertos —ya sean de la administración (open data) o de investigación (datos científicos)—, las revisiones abiertas (open peer review), la ciencia ciudadana (citizen science) o los nuevos modelos de evaluación (new metrics), entre otros ámbitos que han mostrado esta apertura focalizándola en la publicación, los datos recogidos o el proceso de revisión. Cada uno de estos elementos ha desarrollado una implantación y evolución propias que se ha llevado a cabo con poca interrelación entre ellos. Así pues, el concepto de ciencia abierta significa ir un paso más allá y ampliar la perspectiva sobre el funcionamiento de la investigación para conseguir integrar todos estos elementos en una visión global y estratégica de la manera de encarar la ciencia. Quien ha impulsado este nuevo modelo y lo ha situado en la agenda temática mundial ha sido, sin duda, la Comisión Europea con el documento Digital Science in Horizon 2020 (2013) y otros más que le han seguido, en especial las recomendaciones sobre acceso y preservación de la información científica (Comisión Europea, 2018) o el portal sobre ciencia abierta (Comisión Europea, 2019) que recoge la mayoría de los documentos y novedades sobre esta cuestión.
