Taking into account Charlie Balch's comments, is vanity publishing, on balance, a reduction in communication?
From another angle: If the prime duty is to communicate, does everyone share that duty? Equally? If so, should any avenues be restricted or avoided? Perhaps each serves different purposes, by communicating differently?

I also realize that younger scholars, or those in some schools need to build a vitae, but I nevertheless persist in believing that our prime duty is to communicate to others.
