Hello all, I'm helping to organize two upcoming conference workshops that may be of interest, at CHI and iConference. The workshop paper deadlines are coming up within a few weeks, so I wanted to spread the word! Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks, Oliver Between the Lines: Reevaluating the Online/Offline Binary A CHI 2015 Workshop Saturday, April 18, 2015 Seoul, Korea https://chibetweenthelines.wordpress.com/ *Call for Papers:* This workshop brings together scholars, designers, developers, and practitioners who engage with people’s practices of self and identity management online and offline. The goal is to unpack implied assumptions and articulate what “online” and “offline” really mean. This involves exploring and explaining how these terms are used, when, by whom, and why. In addition, we will explore what—if any—leverage the different conceptualizations bring, and discuss the value of thinking about “online” and “offline” as more than conventions that describe human-embodied face-to-face interaction, as opposed to digitally mediated contexts. Overall, the ongoing debate that scholars in different spheres have had about online/offline becomes newly focused when we address what this means through the lens of self and identity. This workshop aims to engage and refresh our thinking about this topic while drawing together threads from different fields and ways of thinking. We invite 2-4 page submissions for this one-day workshop in the CHI Extended Abstracts format that describe ongoing research efforts and/or ask questions that challenge the binary of the “online” versus the “offline” self. Submissions will be selected based on originality, quality, and ability to promote discussion during the workshop. Submissions and questions should be directed to Sarah Vieweg ( sarahvieweg@gmail.com) by January 5, 2015. At least one author from each accepted paper must register and attend the workshop and at least one day of the ACM CHI 2015 conference. *Important Dates:* Submissions due: EXTENDED DEADLINE January 19, 2015 Notification: February 13, 2015 Workshop date: April 18, 2015 *Workshop Organizers:* Sarah Vieweg, Oliver L. Haimson, Michael Massimi, Kenton O'Hara, Elizabeth F. Churchill _____________________________________________________________________________________ *Call for Presenters: iConference 2015 workshop on Exploring Gender, Race, and Sexuality with Social Media Data* *Newport Beach, California, USA. March 24, 2015* Social media data present a powerful opportunity for researchers to explore how they might ask nuanced questions regarding the intersectionality of gender, race, and sexuality. Recent controversies like #Gamergate and #YesAllWomen, both of which unfolded over social media channels and left a rich trail of data, can have important implications for understanding feminism, sexism, and misogyny. At the same time, online communities are active, dynamic populations that can respond to research in real time. For instance, Black Twitter has responded to and discussed research focused on stakeholders in its community, demonstrating the importance of ethical practices and accountability to online communities when conducting social media data analysis. We invite anyone interested in discussing these questions and controversies to join us at this iConference workshop where we will: · Help build a community of researchers working on issues of gender, race, and/or sexuality within the information sciences and related fields. · Create skill-building experiences that enable researchers to collect and analyze social media data to further their own work. · Explore how to analyze social media data ethically and develop practices that respect and engage the sometimes vulnerable and marginalized populations who may have generated the data. · Critically discuss the use of social media data to generate new insights and scholarship. We welcome both new and experienced researchers and encourage participation from a wide range of methodological orientations, including qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods. *CALL FOR PRESENTERS* Workshop participation is open to all. However, to facilitate the opportunity for a select set of presentations at the workshop, we welcome any interested scholars to submit a position paper, methods paper, or case study. Papers should describe novel and ethical research involving the use of social media data for the exploration of gender, race, and/or sexuality. We particularly welcome submissions from participants dealing with issues of intersectionality. Paper submissions are entirely optional, but if desired should be 2-4 pages in the iConference 2015 format <http://ischools.org/the-iconference/program/author-instructions/#template>. If accepted, authors will be provided with presentation details in advance of the workshop; they will also be invited to share their data for workshop demonstration purposes. We will provide opportunities throughout the workshop for presenters to get feedback on their research from workshop attendees and organizers. Participant papers will be made available on the workshop website <https://iconferencesocialmediadata.wordpress.com/> with author permission. *HOW TO SUBMIT* Email your paper to ohaimson@uci.edu by January 16, 2015 at 5pm PST. *TIMELINE* Paper deadline: January 16, 2015 Decision notifications: February 16, 2015 Workshop: March 24, 2015 *ORGANIZERS* Oliver L.
