He was known both for his coding skills, helping create *RSS <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS>*, *Creative Commons <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_Commons>*, *Markdown <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Markdown>*, as well as his activism, founding '*Demand Progress <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demand_Progress>*' and opposing *SOPA/PIPA <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protests_against_SOPA_and_PIPA>* amongst others. A portion of the May 2012 *Internet Society live webcast <https://isoc.live/4697/>* of him describing the SOPA/PIPA fight at *Freedom to Connect <http://freedom-to-connect.net/2012/videos.html>* was shown at his memorial at NYC's Cooper Union.
