Dear members, FYI ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Jörg Pohle <joerg.pohle@hiig.de> Date: Mon, Nov 18, 2024 at 12:01 PM Subject: Reminder & Deadline Extension: Call for Contributions & Invitation: 18th Interdisciplinary Workshop “Privacy, Data Protection & Surveillance”, 10 December 2024, Berlin To: Jörg Pohle <joerg.pohle@hiig.de> Dear participants in past workshops, I would like to remind you of our call for contributions for and invitation to our 18th interdisciplinary workshop “Privacy, Data Protection & Surveillance”, which will take place on Tuesday, December 10, 2024 from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG) in Berlin *CfP and registration*: https://www.hiig.de/en/events/xviiith-interdisciplinary-workshop -privacy-data-protection-surveillance/ *Extended Deadline*: Monday, November 25, 2024 *Date and location* 10 December 2024 12:00pm – 6:00pm Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society Französische Str. 9 10117 Berlin *Call for contributions* With this workshop, we want to offer particularly young researchers the opportunity to present and discuss current research work from the very broad and diverse research field of privacy, surveillance, and data protection in an interdisciplinary environment. We welcome article and dissertation projects, theoretical and empirical work, analyses as well as proposed solutions from all disciplines – and it may explicitly be work in progress. In addition to the discussion of open research questions, the workshop will particularly focus on the critical reflection of the participants’ own research premises, school(s) of thought, and discipline(s). Personalisation, whether of advertising, content, products, or medicine, is a growing trend – or perhaps hype – across many areas, claiming to focus on addressing individual needs, preferences, and behaviours. Whether a trend or hype, what is characteristic of personalization is the need for data on these needs, preferences, and behaviours, along with the constant demand for more and increasingly detailed data. This hunger for data is not the only dark side of personalization. There are public and academic discussions surrounding personalised disinformation and manipulation, echo chambers and filter bubbles, discrimination, and the loss of diversity. How can the undesirable implications of increasing personalisation be addressed in theory and practice? Are these even data-induced implications that can be solved through regulatory, ethical, or practical approaches to data? *Participation* If you are interested in attending the event, please fill in our registration form at the bottom of this page by Monday, November 25 (extended!), 2024 at the latest, indicating whether you would like to attend as a listener or as a speaker. Speakers are asked to provide a title and an extended abstract (approx. 800 words) of the presentation, which should last max. 15 minutes. You are also welcome to provide information about your disciplines, areas of interest, and research interests. Within the general topic, you are completely free to choose your subject and to set a focus for your presentation, even beyond our proposed focus. The workshop program will be sent to all registered participants by December 3, 2024. We are very much looking forward to your participation and contribution. *Timeline* *25 November 2024*: Registration and submission deadline *(extended)* 26 November 2024: Notification to submitters 3 December 2024: Workshop programme *10 December 2024: Workshop* Unfortunately, we cannot reimburse travel or accommodation expenses.
