See the AAM Proposal for Educational Fair Use Guidelines for Digital Images http://www.aam-us.org/fairuse.htm My understanding is that if you have a small part of a work ("few images") in a scholarly article, you are okay under fair use. To the extent that you are not paid for your article. That is, this is a not-for-profit versus commercial activity, you are safe.
