In response to the email I received asking about the details of ECSCW. I thought I should let people know that two conferences of interest to virtual community researchers and designers that are happening in September in Europe. The dates were designed so that people can attend both conferences. The first is: 8th European Conference of Computer-supported Cooperative Work (ECSCW) 14.-18. September 2003, Helsinki, Finland http://ecscw2003.oulu.fi/ CSCW is a multidisciplinary area of research devoted to the use of computers to support cooperative work and a meeting area for research coming from technology and human and social sciences. The community encompasses interests in systems development and design, the theory and practice of CSCW, the installation and use of CSCW systems, the application of novel technologies, and the relation between the social and the technical. This conference has been run for a number of years and is the preeminent european conference in the area of CSCW, groupware, and other collaborative technologies. I suggest that those that are interested look at some of the papers from 1999 and 2001. http://www.cti.dtu.dk/projects/cscw/ECSCW99.html http://ecscw2001.gmd.de/Introduction.html The second: International Conference on Communities and Technologies September 19 to 21, 2003 in the city of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. http://www-winfo.uni-siegen.de/wulf/CT2003/ More and more, the relationship between communities and technology is a topic of major research interest. ‘C&T’ conference serve as a forum for stimulating and disseminating research into all facets of communities supported by information technology. This is a new conference with a great opening program. Regards Quentin
