There appears to be a general reluctance toward using academics as expert sources among American tech journalists - in contrast to almost any other beat in journalism. I honestly don't get why podcasts and YouTubers don't avail themselves more of this. Particularly our community is brim-filled with people like Dr. boyd who express themselves clearly and compellingly about sometimes quite technical concepts.
From side-hustling as a tech journalist myself, I have come to suspect it has to do with the fact that many of the younger tech journalists currently dominating the discourse are actually not trained as journalists, but came up through blogging and social media.
This means that they don't know the value of leaving the expertise to the experts in reporting. They want to be the experts themselves. I personally struggle with this qnd have to keep a tight discipline to ensure that I don't fall into the same trap when I do journalistic reporting. Dear Internet Researchers,
To give some context, I am not living in the US and I am a Historian of an Internet that might be labelled as 1.0 so I find the "Power USer" podcast interesting to get a grip on today's Internet. I am finding almost every guest on the podcast has something interesting to say, whether it is about Spotify, Musk's zoomers, or Deepseek... but I am also puzzled why guests are never Academics (or are they ?).
I wonder what you Internet Researchers think about this podcast and why Academics from this community are not invited ? -- *********************************************** Alexandre Hocquet Archives Henri Poincaré & RWTH c:o/re https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://poincare.univ-lorraine.fr/fr/membre-titu... *********************************************** _______________________________________________ The Air-L@listserv.aoir.org mailing list is provided by the Association of Internet Researchers https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://aoir.org__;!!LIr3w8kk_Xxm!rSzRaG7VEqYOEHF...
