Re poor spam scam targetting. If I had received an email which appeared to be from my bank and for security reasons asked me to reregister my password or have my account (reluctantly) frozen, I might have responded. As it was I received such an email from four banks, none of which I bank with. I became just a tad suspicious :) ----- Original Message ----- From: <air-l-aoir.org-request@listserv.aoir.org> To: <air-l-aoir.org@listserv.aoir.org> Sent: Thursday, December 02, 2004 8:10 PM Subject: Air-l-aoir.org Digest, Vol 5, Issue 2

Dan Drezner and Henry Farrell (the co-author of that piece in Foreign Policy) also have the draft of a related paper available online with a summary and link here: http://www.crookedtimber.org/archives/002223.html
Also, with Jason Gallo and Sean Zehnder, I am working on a political blogging paper from which we'll be presenting material at the Eastern Sociological Society meetings in DC in March and at the Midwest Political Science Assn meetings in Chicago in April. We are using social network analysis to map the political blogosphere and look at the extent of cross-ideological discussions. It's not quite ready for circulation, but feel free to send me a note if you'd like us to keep you posted.

Sarah, Daniel Drezner, a political scientist/blogger at the University of Chicago, has recently been doing a lot on blogging, and just published a piece in Foreign Policy, I think. http://www.danieldrezner.com/research/blogpaperfinal.pdf http://danieldrezner.com/policy/webofinfluence.htm

mapping from an online identity to a legal identity--these seem like Bad Ideas. But is there a strong case for protecting an open system from passive surveillance?
A colleague is advising a senior capstone thesis in political blogging and its impact, and had the following questions after finding few academic publications. I'd appreciate any suggestions for her, off-list or on.
Are there major academic articles about political blogs? In what journals? Are there major theories that we should consider? What criteria do you apply to blogs when analyzing them?
Thanks, Sarah

CALL FOR PAPERS
We at the "Social Science Computer Review" are putting together a timely special issue on "Patriotic Information Systems," treating the intersection of the Patriot Act and related legislation, dataveillance and efforts to control information, and the effect on journalism, law, and civil liberties. We are soliciting proposals immediately and hope to receive manuscripts by May 10, in the range of 12 to 40 double spaced pages. While we have lined up a number of exciting contributions, we do wish additional participation.
If you wish to view information about our journal, which is now in its third decade of publication, the website is http://www.sagepub.com/journal.aspx?pid=198. There is also an auxiliary website, with an author's guide and other materials at http://hcl.chass.ncsu.edu/sscore/sscore.htm.
If you are interested in participating in this special issue, please contact me at david_garson@ncsu.edu. Please put the term "Patriotic Information Systems" in your subject: line. Please note we are not soliciting general overview essays.
