The roundtable is part of the upcoming STS-CH Conference 2025 "Holding things together? Change, continuity, critique"<https://express.converia.de/frontend/index.php?folder_id=9752&page_id=%C2%A8$>. The conference will take place from September 10–12, 2025 in Zurich (hosted by the University of Zurich, ETH, and ZHdK). Deadline for abstract submission: May 18, 20215 About the Roundtable The ways we study contemporary technologies shape not only how we understand their sociotechnical world but also key epistemic questions about how the researchers involved in their world-building create knowledge and collaborate. In this roundtable, we’ll explore questions of critique and epistemology in researching controversial technologies (such as blockchain). Rather than simply doing critique, our aim is to use critique as a point of departure — a lens through which to examine and reflect on our own research practices. We invite contributions that critically engage with the question of how our own research practices as a scientific community studying meaning-laden technology are in themselves practices of epistemic world-building. We welcome contributions that explore, challenge, and reflect on this very question from diverse perspectives and methodologies. Submission Guidelines We aim to have a collective discussion on the above questions, rather than a presentation-focused panel. To take part in the roundtable, please submit your bio and a short response to the theme(s) and question(s) of the roundtable, highlighting the question(s) you are interested in taking up together. You are welcome to incorporate an abstract of a paper or a project you are working on in your submission and draw on it during the roundtable. Our focus during the roundtable will be on shared themes and intersecting concerns across participants, rather than individual presentations.
