I've always wondering this myself - especially considering that the act of sending an email apologising about sending an email could potentially be received as spam, or at the least more annoying than receiving the cross-posted information without qualifications, which, as you say, recipients might recognise as an effort to get the information out as widely as possible.
I'm sure there's at least one article in that don't you think?
