Dear AoIR list members,
I'm doing some work from a discourse analysis perspective on the way interactions on Facebook public groups take place. I'm specifically looking at the RIP pages set up in response to the death of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
I'm familiar with a lot of the research literature on Facebook, but most of what I know is based on studies that examined personal Facebook accounts/wall interactions.
Can anyone please recommend studies of Facebook groups? I'm especially interested in anything that has a linguistic/discourse analysis focus, but it would also be good to learn from studies from a more general social science perspective too.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
Ruth

From the ad: The Post Doctoral Associate will assist with a one-year research project entitled Evaluating The Effectiveness of Social Media for Improving College Access. The goal of the project is to assess the effectiveness of a series of software products and social media applications designed to address college access issues. These products were funded by the College Knowledge Challenge project: see www.collegeknowledgechallenge.org/. The post-doc will work closely with Drs. Ellison and Junco to design, conduct, and write up a series of studies using server-level and survey data.
The postdoc will be an equal member of the research team. S/he will be expected not only to assist with the research but to take the lead in working with external groups (such as schools and software developers), designing and implementing research studies, and working with the rest of the project team. The postdoc will be expected to contribute substantially to publications resulting from the project, including acting as first author on some and as a secondary author on others.
The successful candidate will have experience in the following areas:
*Manipulating and analyzing quantitative data sets *Knowledge of advanced statistical techniques *Conducting outcomes assessments *Understanding of or interest in young people, college access, and educational technologies or social media more broadly *Conducting literature reviews and writing up research results *Ability to work effectively with a research team *Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate with external parties such as technology developers and K-12 contacts *Ability to independently plan and implement research projects
Required Qualifications A Ph.D. degree in a relevant field, including but not limited to education, communication, information studies, psychology, or sociology, completed no later than June 30, 2014. Strong quantitative analysis and survey design skills and experience are required. Familiarity with the college access and educational technology literatures is desired. We hope to find someone with a strong work ethic, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to work independently.
Details about how to apply are in the posting. Please let Rey or I know if you have any questions. Please share!
Thanks, Nicole ------------------------ Nicole Ellison Associate Professor School of Information University of Michigan

Hi all, As you may have remember, couple of weeks ago I solicited readings on social media for an independent study that I was planning on conducting next term. I promised you that I'd share my compiled list. You can access it here:

Sorry it took me awhile. The list is great and covers a range of topics about social media. Thank you for everyone for sharing the wealth. Enjoy!

Call for Abstracts, deadline Jan 31
Digital Media and Society
Papers are sought that illuminate the role of digital media in
contemporary
societies. The theoretical framework of the paper should fit recognizably within the field of sociology. It may be analytical or structural in nature (eg. network analysis) or more oriented to the phenomenology of the experience of social interactions involving digital media (eg. the analysis of interactions; the presentation of the self). Ideally all the papers, while specializing in certain areas, will demonstrate an awareness of the importance of both of these dimensions in how digital media shapes and is shaped by social life. The idea is to highlight current research, to encourage intellectual community among sociological researchers in this area, and to provide an opportunity to identify and deepen shared themes of research.

Not a problem guys! When I had inquired about this couple of weeks a lot of people messaged me privately to ask for a compiled list. Just got around to it. In retrospect I should have just started on Google docs to begin with. Hind sight 20/20. Please add more stuff so we can all use it. Forgot about danah's list so glad someone put that there :) Howard has a nice syllabus at the end of the list too.

Dear fellow AoiR's
I am looking for any scholarly work on the "selfie", from any disciplinary perspective
Also, has anyone written on recent examples of social/political protest in social media, involving either messages written directly on the body, or individuals holding small pieces of paper with a message on them?
putting together an exciting preliminary project and want to make sure I don't miss anything
thanks very much in advance
Adi
