Tama Gemma Cobb, one of my Phd students here at Sussex, is currently writing up her work on pro-ana and social media. She has had a very interesting experience when it comes to banned hashtags on social media. It would certainly be worth checking in with her about this because she found some fascinating practices that were being engaged in by pro-ana folk, in response to hashtag censorship. You can find Gemma’s details online, or email off-list if you want me to put you in contact with her. Tama,
Just a very quick suggestion, it might be worth thinking about banned emojis not just text (just in case you weren¹t - sorry it wasn¹t¹ clear). I found out in a digital methods workshop (honest - no really honest) that single aubergine (eggplant) searches are a problem, but double is okayŠ go figureŠ If this means nothing to you google it, maybe not at work unless you have a pass out for sexually explicit materialsŠ I love my job.
Cheers, Ben.

Add to the list: #selfharm and #selfharmm to the list.
Other related # re: selfharm and mental illness still pop up on IG including substitutes like #blythe #thynspoo, but the content advisory message pops up.
Previously banned: #edm (see here: https://thump.vice.com/en_au/article/heres-the-real-reason-why-instagram- b anned-the-edm-hashtag) and articles on the previously banned #curvy cover other related # like #braless, #vagina, #goddess etc.
Good luck in your search!

Hi All,
Just wondering if anyone either has a full working list of the hashtag searches that Instagram has banned? Or, even better, if anyone has been doing any work with the implications of these bans?
Thanks in advance, Tama
