Further Particulars
The Institute of Advanced Studies in Management and Social Sciences
Lancaster University was rated among the top ten UK institutions in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise with strength in depth in management and social sciences. The Institute of Advanced Studies was established in 2003 to consolidate and develop Lancaster as a leading centre of excellence for inter-, trans- and post-disciplinary research, both nationally and internationally. The Director of the Institute is Professor Bob Jessop and the Chair of the Academic Board is Professor John Urry. Institute members pursue a wide range of theoretical and empirical research that challenges traditional disciplines and fields of study through the incorporation of new theories, methods, frameworks, and data and the Institute itself aims to build effective links between the various management disciplines with broader concerns in political economy and the social sciences.
The Postdoctoral Research Fellowship
As part of its overall mission, the Institute is offering two postdoctoral research fellowships commencing on 1st October 2004 or as soon as possible thereafter. Their purpose is to offer opportunities for an outstanding scholar with a recently awarded doctorate (normally in the last 3 years) to strengthen his/her research profile and contribute to the mission of the Institute. The positions are open to scholars from any country.
There is no predefined field for research but proposals should be inter-, trans-, or post-disciplinary within the overall mission of the Institute (see http://www.lancaster.ac.uk/ias for further information and particulars). By way of non-exhaustive illustration, topics could fall within the areas of the knowledge-based economy, regional economic development, the professions, security, governance, intellectual property, information and communication technologies, the learning society. Potential candidates are invited to discuss preliminary proposals with the Director, Professor Bob Jessop, by e-mail (R.Jessop@lancs.ac.uk).
The fellowship is for 24-months (not renewable). The salary scale is spine point 6 on the Research Grade 1A scale. The Fellow will belong both to the Institute and to an appropriate department of the University. The IASMSS is able to make contributions towards certain research expenses associated with the Fellowship. Fellows benefit from the advice and support of a mentor from the Institute but no formal supervision is offered.
Applicants should submit a CV, a 4-5 page research proposal, and ask three referees to send references directly to Personnel Services, Lancaster University, LA1 4YW, quoting A278, without further requests to do so. Long-listed candidates will then be asked to submit written work and interviews will take place on 13th and 14th July, when candidates will also give a short seminar presentation on their research. The Institute will pay fares and expenses for short-listed candidates to attend interviews.
Preliminary inquiries can be made to Professor Bob Jessop, Director of the IASMSS, by e-mail (R.Jessop@lancs.ac.uk) or telephone: (+44) 1524 594192.
