Apple Mac qualitative data analysis
Hi I recommend TAMS for Mac OS X for qualitative analysis. It doesn't have the most advanced features of the proprietary versions such as NVivo but it is free - and it is free software. It handles Text files really well and can produce stats that can be outputted to Excel etc for tables and graphs. http://tamsys.sourceforge.net/ There is also a Linux version. Best David
Hi all, does anyone have any experience with qualitative data analysis packages (think NVivo or Atlas.ti) for Mac? Everything I know of seems to be for PC only... any suggestions would be appreciated. :)
Thanks! Andrea

I'm guessing you used it on Parallels or some similar system, then, Andrea, because the website seems to imply it is indeed Windows-only: https://www.qsrinternational.com/products_nvivo_system-requirements.aspx (as does the asp.net in the url...). Thank you very much for the recommendation for TAMS, David. The GTAMS version looks pretty hideous, but I might soon give it a whirl. I'm quite intrigued; I'm still doing interview transcription and coding on paper or in a basic word processor. Thanks all who've contributed to this thread (and other similar ones) over the past week or so. On Wed, Feb 4, 2009 at 9:48 AM, Andrea Kavanaugh <kavan@vt.edu> wrote:

The website is deceptive in that actually, mentioning somewhere that it "works with macs." But what they really mean is that since you can run windows either via bootcamp or Parallels (etc) that it "works." Casey On Wed, Feb 4, 2009 at 10:45 AM, Conor Schaefer <conor.schaefer@gmail.com> wrote:

Oh, I wish. It doesn¹t even work in Parallels. You have partition the hard drive, install windows, install NVIVO then reboot the computer into the Windows side every time you want use it. Major P. I. T. A. for a dedicated Mac user. But it is an extremely powerful program. You can mark/tag images, video and audio as well as text. You can really play with your data in many different ways. Ummm.....perhaps try it on VMWare instead of Paralells. I've used several unique Windows security/forensics programs in VMWare w/o problems that way and w/o having to reboot. It's great to drag-n-drop files/data/logs/outputs from the Windows side right to my OSX desktop for instant use elsewhere. Disclosure: I'm not familiar with NVIVO or Paralells. -rf On Feb 4, 2009, at 19:29 , mhward wrote:

I see that the latest versions of NVIVO are now claiming to work under Parallels. Hmmm. I'll have to experiment. It would be a great step forward if it's true. M-H On 5/02/09 12:00 PM, "Richard Forno" <rforno@infowarrior.org> wrote:

Hello, TamsAnalyser (already mentioned) is one of the best computer assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) designed for Mac OS X. http://tamsys.sourceforge.net/ NB: As far as I know, the Linux version is unfortunately a bit out-dated... but the Mac version is very up-to-date and useful. A preview of the next version of Weft QDA (by Alex Fenton) is also available. Weft QDA :: http://www.pressure.to/qda/ Preview :: http://rubyforge.org/frs/?group_id=665&release_id=21324 (choose the 1.9.0 dmg file) Both TamsAnalyser and Weft QDA are free software. Hope it helps Christophe -- See also my CAQDAS overview on http://analyses.ishs.ulg.ac.be/logiciels/fonctionnalite_caqdas.en.html
Hello air-listers I am currently running NVivo8 on a Macbook using VMWare. I run Windows XP within Mac OSX. Sometimes I have some slow moments, but on the whole, NVivo works and works well - I have now got to the stage of testing it running large queries and, unlike previous set-ups, NVivo hasn't crashed. I did upgrade my Macbook from 2GB RAM to 4GB - but this cost under $AU 100 doing it myself with a friend's assistance. I did consider the idea of using TAMS. The main issue for me was that I had already put a lot of work into the NVivo file and would have had to begin again and learn a new program without any technical assistance around me (I have colleagues that use and understand NVivo that I can talk to). I certainly enjoy using OSX more than XP - so perhaps for the next project, I will go with a Mac-native qual analysis package. So, I would love to hear people's experiences with the different programs and I'll take that information into account when I get to this decision! Well I don't know about nVivo 8 but ver. 7 works perfectly in Parallels here (iMac Duo) and if you have a good amount of ram (I suggest at least 2Gb) you can switch seamless between win machine (Xp is recommended) and your mac . Anyway for minor projects I've used Hyper research (there's also a free version that you can try) and it worked quite well for me. Depending on the type of qualitative research you do, you might want to take a look at Tinderbox. I have been using Tinderbox (http://www.eastgate.com/Tinderbox/ ) for several years and have found it to be an excellent tool for ethnographic fieldnotes and research analysis. It is much less structured than many of the tools already mentioned, so it may not be the best option for some. But it is very flexible and shines when working with semi-structured and unstructured notes/data and for focusing on emergent structure within your notes. It also uses XML as its native file format, which I find to be a benefit. Kindly, Trevor ____ Trevor S.
