Definitions for Social Media Sites
First of all I have found this group to be an amazing resource. So thank you. Second, I am a criminologist who researches social media, so I am still learning. That said, I am looking for a good and trusted academic resource for definitions for social media sites. It could be a book, or a website, but I am attempting to provide appropriate definitions for reddit, 4chan, YikYak, etc. What is a go-to source for that? Thank you in advance! Best, Becky Rebecca Hayes, Ph.D. Sociology, Anthropology & Social Work Central Michigan University
Hello! I'm sure there'll be lots of great suggestions forthcoming, but I'd recommend boyd & Ellison's "Social Network Sites: Definition, History, and Scholarship" as a starting point: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1083-6101.2007.00393.x/full Cheers, Josh On 09/25/2017 12:23 PM, Hayes, Rebecca M wrote:

One thing worth noting about the boyd and Ellison piece -- which is often cited to define "social media" -- is that they don't define social media in there. The term "social media" appears only once in that paper, as part of the background ("Furthermore, as the social media and user-generated content phenomena grew, websites focused on media sharing began implementing SNS features and becoming SNSs themselves. Examples include Flickr (photo sharing), Last.FM (music listening habits), and YouTube (video sharing)." pg. 216). They explicitly define "social network sites," which they explicitly differentiate from "networking" sites. Aaron On Mon, Sep 25, 2017 at 11:27 AM, Joshua Braun <jabraun@journ.umass.edu> wrote:

Becky, Another great resource for defining social media is Fuchs, C. (2017). Social media: a critical introduction, 2nd edition <http://fuchs.uti.at/books/2nd-edition-social-media-a-critical-introduction/>. London: Sage. If you look at pages 37-39 of the book, you'll find that Fuchs has identified a whole host of different definitions of social media, all with citations to take you to where those sources are located. Better still, the particular chapter to which I'm referring is one of the sample chapters offered free for download directly from his website: http://fuchs.uti.at/wp-content/Chapter2.pdf. Hope you find this helpful, John __________________________________ John L. All, Superb suggestions so far. I would add to the boyd and Ellison starting point two follow-up articles that, together, deepen and reconsider their definition: Beer, David. 2008. “Social Network(ing) Sites…revisiting the Story so Far: A Response to danah boyd & Nicole Ellison.” Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication 13 (2): 516–29. Ellison, Nicole, and danah boyd. 2013. “Sociality through Social Network Sites.” In The Oxford Handbook of Internet Studies., edited by William H. Dutton, 151–72. Oxford: Oxford University Press. Then I would point to those who have tried to clarify the definition of "platform" (some of these are noted in the Fuchs intro): Burgess, Jean, and Joshua Green. 2009. YouTube: Online Video and Participatory Culture. Cambridge: Polity Press. Gillespie, Tarleton. 2010. “The Politics of ‘Platforms.’” New Media & Society 12 (3): 347–64. doi:10.1177/1461444809342738. Elkin-Koren, Niva. 2010. “User-Generated Platforms.” In Working within the Boundaries of Intellectual Property: Innovation Policy for the Knowledge Society, edited by Rochelle Dreyfuss, Diane Zimmerman, and Harry First. Oxford: Oxford University Press. Van Dijck, José. 2013. The Culture of Connectivity: A Critical History of Social Media. Oxford University Press. Gehl, Robert W. 2014. Gillespie, Tarleton. “The platform metaphor, revisited” HIIG Science Blog (August 23, 2017). https://www.hiig.de/en/blog/the-platform-metaphor-revisited/ And, if I might be so bold, I'm putting the finishing touches on a book about platforms and the project of content moderation. The first and last chapters argue that focusing on content moderation should change how we understand platforms themselves. The relevant parts of of those two chapters to this discussion, where I articulate my definition of 'platform' and summarize scholars who have thought of platforms as media, as markets, and as architecture. (This is work still in progress, and I hope to redo this excerpt as I revisit more and more of the writing being suggested here, so offline comments are most welcome.) http://bit.ly/definingplatforms Tarleton On Sep 25, 2017, 1:38 PM -0400, Elena Pavan <elena.pavan@sns.it>, wrote: Another piece that connects social media to user generated contents and distinguishes between different types of platforms is Kaplan, A. Superb suggestions so far. I would add to the boyd and Ellison starting point two follow-up articles that, together, deepen and reconsider their definition:

And, if I might be so bold, I'm putting the finishing touches on a book about platforms and the project of content moderation. The first and last chapters argue that focusing on content moderation should change how we understand platforms themselves. The relevant parts of of those two chapters to this discussion, where I articulate my definition of 'platform' and summarize scholars who have thought of platforms as media, as markets, and as architecture. (This is work still in progress, and I hope to redo this excerpt as I revisit more and more of the writing being suggested here, so offline comments are most welcome.)

Subject: Re: [Air-L] Definitions for Social Media Sites
One thing worth noting about the boyd and Ellison piece -- which is
often cited to define "social media" -- is that they don't define
social media in there. The term "social media" appears only once in
that paper, as part of the background ("Furthermore, as the social
media and user-generated content phenomena grew, websites focused on
media sharing began implementing SNS features and becoming SNSs
themselves. Examples include Flickr (photo sharing), Last.FM (music
listening habits), and YouTube (video sharing)." pg. 216). They
explicitly define "social network sites," which they explicitly
differentiate from "networking" sites.

It quite possibly the weirdest name circumstance I can imagine, I, Rebecca A. Hayes, am replying to Rebecca M. Hayes (who, in another random coincidence, teaches where my dad taught for years) in response to this, but I digress. Becky, In some selfish self-citing, check out Carr, C. T., & Hayes, R. A. (2015). Social media: Defining, developing, and divining. *Atlantic Journal of Communication*, 23(1), 46-65. doi:10.1080/15456870.2015.972282 I can send you a copy if you don't have access.
Best,
Becky

Dear Becky, I would like to add one more definition of social media from the sea of all definitions. I usually call it the "OII definition". "Internet-based platform that allows the creation and exchange of user-generated content, usually using either mobile or web-based technologies” (Margetts, John, Hale, & Yasseri, 2015, p. 5). The Editors’ Introduction to the forthcoming SAGE Handbook of Social Media says: “By social media technologies, we mean those digital platforms, services and apps built around the convergence of content sharing, public communication, and interpersonal connection.” On 3/10/17, 12:53 am, "Air-L on behalf of C.H." <air-l-bounces@listserv.aoir.org on behalf of chainsawtiney@gmail.com> wrote: Dear Becky, I would like to add one more definition of social media from the sea of all definitions.
