Another piece that connects social media to user generated contents and distinguishes between different types of platforms is Kaplan, A. M. and M. Haenlein. 2010. “Users of the world, unite! The challenges and opportunities of Social Media”. Business Horizion 53: 59-68. hope this helps! ciao elena Il 25/09/2017 18:55, Eddington, Sean M ha scritto:

One thing worth noting about the boyd and Ellison piece -- which is often cited to define "social media" -- is that they don't define social media in there. The term "social media" appears only once in that paper, as part of the background ("Furthermore, as the social media and user-generated content phenomena grew, websites focused on media sharing began implementing SNS features and becoming SNSs themselves. Examples include Flickr (photo sharing), Last.FM (music listening habits), and YouTube (video sharing)." pg. 216). They explicitly define "social network sites," which they explicitly differentiate from "networking" sites.

Second, I am a criminologist who researches social media, so I am still learning. That said, I am looking for a good and trusted academic resource for definitions for social media sites. It could be a book, or a website, but I am attempting to provide appropriate definitions for reddit, 4chan, YikYak, etc.
What is a go-to source for that?
Thank you in advance!
Best,
