research on older people's use of social networking sites
I wonder if anyone on this site is doing research on older people's (60+ yrs) use of social networking sites (e.g. facebook, myspace), or if you know of any such work. If so, I'd like to hear from you. with best wishes, Dr Virpi Ylanne Centre for Language and Communication Cardiff University, Wales, UK ylanne@cf.ac.uk
I am likewise curious, as we are interested in the use of social networking by people with disabilities, who can, in some cases share similar characteristics of limitation. -||- Paul M.A. Baker, Ph.D., Director of Research Center for Advanced Communications Policy (CACP) Georgia Institute of Technology 500 10th St. NW #312 Atlanta, GA 30332 404.385.4618 [paul.baker@cacp.gatech.edu] www.cacp.gatech.edu / www.wirelessrerc.org -||- On Jul 25, 2009, at 11:46 AM, Virpi Ylanne wrote:

Paul If you are interested in people with disabilities and social networking, a good starting point is the BBC site "Ooch". http://www.bbc.co.uk/ouch/ Andrew Clark On 26/07/2009, at 2:10 AM, Paul M.A. Baker wrote:

I believe also that "SAGA"'s social networking site is very popular in the UK: http://www.sagazone.co.uk/ There was a report on the register when it was first set up, but that was 2 years ago: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/10/31/saga_network/ NOt sure about its current popularity, as it's not popular enough to get into the top 10 sites that Neilsen Netratings list!! there have also been some excellent studies of seniornet: http://scholar.google.co.uk/scholar?q=seniornet&hl=en&scoring=r&as_ylo=2004h which pre-dates fb/myspace etc but reveals similar social processes with web 0.5 :-) Ben ---- Dr Ben Anderson Sociology @ Essex http://www.essex.ac.uk/sociology/about/people/staff/anderson.aspx Centre for Research on Economic Sociology and Innovation http://cresi.wordpress.com
hi Ben, we have an early study of seniors' use of the internet (in those days -- early 1990s -- there was a lot of 'social networking' online through localized newsgroups and listservs and access was provided by Virginia Tech's Blacksburg Electronic Village project since the network was still controlled by NSF) published in: Casalegno, Federico, 2000, BEV Seniors, In A. Cohill and A. Kavanaugh (Eds.), Community Networks: Lessons from Blacksburg, Virginia. Norwood, MA: Artech House. let me know if can't get a copy of the book through your library.
