hi Ben, we have an early study of seniors' use of the internet (in those days -- early 1990s -- there was a lot of 'social networking' online through localized newsgroups and listservs and access was provided by Virginia Tech's Blacksburg Electronic Village project since the network was still controlled by NSF) published in: Casalegno, Federico, 2000, BEV Seniors, In A. Cohill and A. Kavanaugh (Eds.), Community Networks: Lessons from Blacksburg, Virginia. Norwood, MA: Artech House. let me know if can't get a copy of the book through your library. I wonder if anyone on this site is doing research on older people's (60+ yrs) use of social networking sites (e.g. facebook, myspace), or if you know of any such work.
there have also been some excellent studies of seniornet:

which pre-dates fb/myspace etc but reveals similar social processes with web 0.5 :-)
