readings for undergrads on uncompensated labor of the internet
Good people, I'm looking for a good reading or other media--ideally short and accessible to undergrads--to introduce the concept of companies profiting from the uncompensated labor of user-generated content and other online behavior. What has worked in your classes when you have introduced this concept? Many thanks! -- Alan Bilansky alanbilansky@gmail.com (201) 743-8670
It's not a reading but I've used this talk by Jonathan Zittrain before: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dw3h-rae3uo&feature=youtu.be It provides some great examples and he's an entertaining speaker - ideal for undergrads! Hope this helps! Hi Alan, This may be a bit longer than you were looking for, but PJ Rey wrote a nice piece on Alienation, Exploitation, and UCG: http://abs.sagepub.com/content/56/4/399.abstract Best, Jenny ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alan Bilansky" <alanbilansky@gmail.com> To: air-l@listserv.aoir.org Sent: Thursday, August 1, 2013 8:34:35 PM Subject: [Air-L] readings for undergrads on uncompensated labor of the internet Good people, I'm looking for a good reading or other media--ideally short and accessible to undergrads--to introduce the concept of companies profiting from the uncompensated labor of user-generated content and other online behavior. Hi Alan: It's a bit heavy on the neo-Marxianism, and focused on the realm of consumer culture, but this Journal of Consumer Culture article by Detlev Zwick et al is my go-to on the subject. Dr. Zwick has a number of articles on this and related topics. http://www.yorku.ca/dzwick/JCC_Governmentality.pdf Best, Rob. Hi Alan, In a recent undergraduate class, I used the postscript from Alexander Galloway's latest book *The Interface Effect* titled "We Are the Gold Farmers" to discuss unpaid microlabor. The students seemed to understand and enjoy it. http://amzn.com/0745662536 Rex On Fri, Aug 2, 2013 at 9:28 AM, Robert Kozinets <rkozinets@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi Alan, My recent paper on P2P and Google has a concise section on how Google monetizes the labour of internet users. http://peerproduction.net/issues/issue-3-free-software-epistemics/peer-revie... Sections "Wealth of Networks" & "How Google Monpolized the Wealth of Networks" Hope this helps. Cheers, Tyler On Thu, Aug 1, 2013 at 8:34 PM, Alan Bilansky <alanbilansky@gmail.com>wrote:
