Teaching Social Media
Hi all- Apologies if the following questions have been asked and answered previously: (a) Does anyone have suggested readings for best practices when teaching courses on social media? (b) Does anyone know of a list of programs offering degrees in social media that I can compare ours against? (c) Do NCA, AoIR, or similar organizations have official statements on the study of social media? All insights are welcome! Best, Seth Seth C. Hello, I have used Stephanie Vie’s book (e)dentity from Fountainhead Press with good success. I know that she is updating it, and that she has been generous enough to share her syllabus for her courses on social media at a graduate and undergraduate level whenever I have asked. She is at the University of Central Florida. Hello Seth – There’s a real dearth of resources on teaching social media. Karen Freberg published one of the only books I know of in this area, “A Roadmap for Teaching Social Media: All the assignments, rubrics, and feedback guides you'll need to present a strategic social media course” available at https://www.amazon.com/Roadmap-Teaching-Social-Media-assignments/dp/15355419... I’m happy to share syllabi and assignment information if you want to reach out directly. I’ve developed resources for courses in digital analytics/SM research techniques for strategic communication, writing for social media, social media campaign development, and a gen. ed survey course that covers ethical, legal, social and political implications of widespread social media use. You may also want to check out the teaching resources section on the AEJMC Public Relations Division website http://aejmc.us/prd/teaching-resources/ (full disclosure – I’m the webmaster for the group) which has several sample syllabi. We’re also building an area to share assignment ideas and other teaching resources so if you come up with any brilliant projects that you want to share let me know and I’ll post them on the site. -Kathleen Kathleen Stansberry, Assistant Professor Cleveland State University k.stansberry@csuohio.edu 541-228-5576 https://www.linkedin.com/in/kathleenstansberry On 12/19/16, 7:14 AM, "Air-L on behalf of Seth C Bradshaw" <air-l-bounces@listserv.aoir.org on behalf of bradshawsc@sfasu.edu> wrote: I am looking for information about social media, not using social media to teach. Hi Seth Greetings!, I teach an elective curse 'Social Media & Business Practices' to MBA students at IIT Delhi. This book is a great starting point: Blanchard, O. (2012). Social Media ROI: Managing and Measuring Social Media Efforts in Your Organization. Pearson: New Delhi. More practical stuff for personal SM branding & community engagement can be taken from: http://guykawasaki.com/books/the-art-of-social-media/ Pull out articles from MIT Sloan Management Review & HBR. There are plenty. Business Horizon has some seminal papers. Social Media examiner, Social Media Week, Social Samosa, SM tab of Mashable, and Pulse in LinkedIn gives you hundreds of caselets. If you want videos, start with likes of: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYI1_gPGu7w Men, Women & Children is a good movie too. Hope this helps. Would love to look at the final syllabus, if possible. Best Regards, Vignesh. http://web.iitd.ac.in/~vignes/ ________________________________ P. I'm not entirely sure whether you mean teaching units about social media, or teaching units using social media, or both.
