administrivia and unsubscriptions
unsubscribe directions were provided by Ulla and Mentor, please follow those. I've turned on the administrative filters for the list, and they should hold most unsubscribe requests and encourage people to read the messages most appropriate to their situation. it is the general list administration policy for us not to do anything that you can do yourselves. if you need more thorough directions they can be provided in personal email. Please read the directions provided in previous emails before asking for more instructions. why is all of this happening? it is because we switched servers to a new service for hosting, this new service using the same software for lists. there has been no change on the system settings side. In the migration, all users of this list had their settings reset, that is just the way it had to work. So there was a change for your individual user settings. You now have a new password, and you need to retrieve that following Ulla's directions, to reset your settings. Now, what this has caused is that the people who are used to receiving a digest of air-l, now receive individual emails. Some of you are finding this irritating, you can solve that by following Ulla's directions for reseting your list settings. Some of you are also irritated because of the rash of administrative requests that you now see, I think that we've put a hold to that. remember, the first thing to do, is read the email that you have received. That will explain how and what you need to do to make things work the way that you want them to work. have a nice day, jeremy hunsinger jhuns@vt.edu www.cddc.vt.edu www.cddc.vt.edu/jeremy www.tmttlt.com () ascii ribbon campaign - against html mail /\ - against microsoft attachments
I know there are rather low word limits on conference paper submissions, those who are putting their papers up for the student paper award (something every student should do), as well as any submissions accepted for the research annual. I seem to recall it being in the 4000-6000 word range. Could someone in-the-know please verify what these numbers are (couldn't find it online)? I'm sure everyone on the list would benefit from the information. Thanks, -TED Ted M. Coopman Department of Communication University of Washington
Due to the multi-disciplinary nature of AoIR we've generally encouraged people to follow their own discipline's general guidelines. For example, in communication this would mean about 25-30 double spaced pages of text max (plus references, etc.). However, from past years I know that some disciplines don't even expect full-length papers at the time of the conference. As a matter of fact, I remember some people being upset because another person only had presentation notes and not a full-length paper, while that person was upset that someone would demand a full paper at that point... Obviously it would be preferable if you had a paper, not just notes, because that way it can be shared with others. However, as I said above, try to do the best work possible according to your discipline's guidelines. As to length of papers for the annual - I don't know. Ulla
Ted and others, The submission length for papers that presenters would like considered for inclusion in the annual is 3500 words. Short -- but we try to pack a lot in each volume. As Ulla points out, there isn't a clear word limit for presentation, but plan on 15 minutes of time to talk. There will be an email going out to presenters very soon with this and other handy information.
