Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute School of Humanities and Social Sciences Department of Language, Literature and Communication Tenure Track Junior Faculty Position in Communication and Technology The Department of Language, Literature and Communication seeks a strong scholar/researcher in communication and technology. We are especially interested in candidates whose focus complements faculty strengths in games studies, human-computer interaction, or new media studies from the perspective of current communication theory and research methods. Candidates are expected to develop a substantial program of research leading to peer-reviewed publication and external funding. Teaching opportunities will be at the undergraduate and graduate level with the typical teaching load set at two courses per semester. Our flexible program allows faculty to devise and teach courses related to individual scholarly interests. The candidate should show evidence of strong promise in teaching and scholarship The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to a multidisciplinary mission in communication in technologically mediated contexts that draws upon communication studies, human-computer interaction, digital rhetoric, technical communication, new media studies, and graphic design. The department has just added an interdisciplinary B.S. in Games and Simulation Arts and Sciences and an M.S. in Human Computer Interaction to a program portfolio that includes one of the top-ranked Ph.D.s in Communication and Rhetoric in the country and a joint B.S. in Electronic Media, Arts, and Communication. The department also makes substantial contributions to teaching in a B.S. and M.S. in Information Technology. Faculty and students have access to the Social and Behavioral Research Laboratory (http://www.sbrl.rpi.edu) and other Institute research facilities. FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS ***Deadline of submission of abstracts (no more than 1,000 words): September 30, 2007*** The Third Asia-Pacific Computing and Philosophy Conference November 2-4, 2007 Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand Website: http://www.stc.arts.chula.ac.th/APCAP2007/ The Third Asia-Pacific Computing and Philosophy Conference will again take place at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. The conference is being held in succession to the successful Second Asia- Pacific Conference in January 2005 (http://www.stc.arts.chula.ac.th/CAP/AP-CAP.html). AP-CAP2007 is part of the series of conferences organized by the International Association for Computing and Philosophy (http://www.ia-cap.org). The conferences have been in held in various regions of the world. As of now there are three major regions where these conferences are held, namely in North America (NA-CAP), Europe (ECAP) and Asia- Pacific. As with the other CAP conferences, AP-CAP2007 will also deal with all aspects of the "computational turn" that is occurring through the interaction of the disciplines of philosophy and computing. And in continuation from the second conference, papers dealing with 'cultural' aspects of computing and philosophy would be specially emphasized, though papers in other areas will of course be welcome. The conference is interdisciplinary: We invite papers from philosophy, computer science, social science and related disciplines. It is foreseen that papers at the Third AP-CAP will be published in the same way. REGISTRATION Due to the foreseen subsidy by the Commission on Higher Education, we are pleased to announce that registration fees for the conference are very much reduced. We have a flat fee of 4,500 Thai Baht for non-members of the International Association for Computing and Philosophy, and members pay only 3,000 Baht. (See this link for currency exchange information). Students don't have to pay registration fees. (Please show your current ID.) The fees for non-members already include membership fees, so everybody becomes a member of the IACAP upon registration to the conference. Due to the low registration fees, we are not in a position to process international transfer of any kind. Assistant Professor of Communication Studies Hollins University is seeking qualified candidates for a new, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Communication Studies, to begin in August 2008. Successful applicants will be well-rounded, and able to contribute to Hollins' liberal arts curriculum by teaching an array of undergraduate rhetoric courses, including public speaking and argument/debate, and at least one basic interpersonal communication course. Ability to teach a course in web design considered a plus. Responsibilities include teaching six courses/year, advising majors, and helping administer our "oral communication across the curriculum" program. Position offers opportunity to develop new courses in candidate's areas of interest in our popular, interdisciplinary major. Requirements include completed Ph.D. by start date (A.B.D.s considered for instructor rank), teaching experience, and evidence of commitment to scholarly research. Finalists will be asked to submit a writing sample.
