Giveaway of the day - MP3 Recorder Studio
Today's Giveaway of the Day software is called MP3 Recorder Studio and it allows you to record internet calls in MP3 format. Might be a very useful tool for research interviews. If you don't already monitor the Giveaway of the Day site I suggest you start doing so...they give away lots of software that could be useful for research purposes. Oh and when you install do read the txt file for activation information. I've been trying to visit this site for a while, but every time I try, their blog's backing database seems to be down... [as is the case right now....]..... --elijah
I went there to go the Skype Recorder as recommended here. Unfortunately I couldn't get it to work. My partner tried the demo version on one of our calls and all he got was barely intelligible noise! We then tried at least 3 others, including PAM. Has anyone here found a recorder that they have used to produce a quality recording, good enough to be transcribed by someone other than themselves? Thanks! Rhiannon elw@stderr.org wrote:

I have been using Ventrilo to conduct my interviews, which comes with a built in recorder. Unfortunately, as I started to write a glowing review of it, I realized that there were more positives than negatives. It does indeed provide good quality audio. Unfortunately, Ventrilo will only save conversations in a file format specific to the program which does not play in most audio players (and the playback GUI in Ventrilo is less than perfect, to say the least). I found myself using an audio editing program to re-record all of my interview to MP3 format. I also had some problems with my interviewee and I being recorded over the top of each other (even though we didn't talk over each other doing the interview). The program that I used to convert my Ventrilo files to MP3 was NGWave ( http://www.ngwave.com/). I found it really to use, and it was easy to edit the levels in the sound files in case one person was recorded at a much louder volume than the other. I have also used Audacity, but I preferred the interface of NGWave enough that I was willing to spend the $30 on it. Also, when you are recording, check to see what audio channel the program is recording from. That may have had caused some of the odd noises in your tests. Hope that helps! Thanks for the source Louis but there are better sites for truly freeware. Also, as noted in the comments of other readers, Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/) is a superior recorder that can be run as a portable application which makes it even more useful for folks who don't have admin privileges. Audacity is both free and open source. Here's some of my favorite links to freeware collections: http://techsupportalert.com/best_46_free_utilities.htm http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/ http://www.portablefreeware.com/ In this context, http://igoogle.com and http://docs.google.com should also be mentioned. IGoogle allows you to easily create a custom website that you can access from anywhere you have net access. I find the notepad, bookmarks/favorites (you can import your current ones), and the calendar particularly useful. Google docs are something like a Wiki except they also provide a spreadsheet and presentation. Changes made by any collaborator are instantly seen by all the other collaborators. My division recently used the spreadsheet to work out our Fall 2008 schedule. It was nice to see what others wanted. I plan to use the docs in a few of my classes next semester -- I'm going to have students collaboratively create fact and instruction sheets. I'm still not sure how I'm going to grade this but I'm excited to try. Note: I'm not affiliated with any of the above except as a user. I do pay for the excellent techsupportalert newsletter.
