Seeking online BA / MA programs in information safety, security
Good morning, everyone, My friend Eric, who is in the Air Force, is looking for online programs in information systems/information security that are BA granting programs, possibly with the option of going on for an MA. Peter, Assuming your friend is also in the USA, regional accreditation issues may be of relevance and should be considered in relation to the use of the degrees. USA accreditation issues aside, one institution to consider is Royal Holloway at the University of London. There is a distance learning option. My current PhD research is in the security management field, and Royal Holloway was just identified for its reputation in information security. As with other graduate programs, an undergraduate degree may not be required for a mature student. So, depending on his experience, he might look at their MSc now. Peter, In the US, online degrees in security offered by traditional universities tend to be graduate programs... both because it's a fairly specialized field and because it's easier to create a graduate degree program online (not so many distribution courses required). For an undergrad program that needs to be online, you'd be looking more to either a commercial school (like Colorado Technical University) or an online branch of a brick-and-mortar institution (like CSU Global [csuglobal.edu] or Regis University [sps.regis.edu])... and you might be looking at a BS in a discipline like CIS, networking, or Computer Science. Once you get to the MS level, the choices broaden. One I'm familiar with is the Norwich University MSIA program, which is very military friendly (ROTC got its start there, and a number of the grad students are actually deployed overseas, so the assignment schedule is flexible). It's on the NSA's list as a Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education, which is a good resource for your search (http://www.nsa.gov/ia/academic_outreach/nat_cae/institutions.shtml).
